Contactless travel tip

Recommended Posts

Any idea if you need to register m8?

I used my contactless card about a year ago on the tube without registering anything, doubt it's changed since then. Worked fine. Just make sure you go out a barrier that won't open until you scan out and you should avoid any problems.

The day ticket is £12 I believe, I was naive enough to buy this when I first started visiting London.

Oyster is £5 and travel is unlimited for £5.90 the last I knew.

Oyster is a complete no brainer.

Last time I went I used my Visa card and it charged the same as an Oyster, as far as I'm aware. Will be doing so again!

EDIT: Checked my statement. We went to Fulham game and back to the centre of London and it was £4.80

I live in London and regularly use contactless instead of my Oyster. It's the same cost for both, calculating the same way regardless of which you use. If you don't already have an Oyster I wouldn't bother paying the deposit to get one... Just use contactless. (Just remember you can't use it for more than one person at a time!)

Why is it a no brainer? Contactless card is free and the fares cost exactly the same - unlimited travel. Oh, and it depends which zones you use for the cap.

As mentioned, the only issue is forgetting to tap out when you leave a station. Remember to do that and all is fine.

You definitely DONT need to register. Just use contactless. It's simple and easy. For those saying remember to tap out, you have to go through the barriers so that's your tapping out.

Not if you're at a station that doesn't have barriers.

Not if the barriers are open because of congestion (i.e. they probably will be at Wembley).

So yeah, those saying remember have a good point. Also remember to tap in.

Unless you've already posted in the other thread about this, then you will be automatically allowed to travel for free.

Be wary.  At Charlton this season police opened the gates to exit the station so no chance to tap out and after the game escorted us back onto the station via a back gate, no chance to tap in.  I know of people who were charged far more than I paid for a day ticket because of this.

You can go to a ticket office and get a refund if this happens.

Happened to me at Notting Hill carnival a few years ago when they had opened all the barriers and completely switched off all the machines.

Can also submit a claim online if you've registered your card/oyster.
