Our Best Attacking Setup?

Recommended Posts

There's been a bit of debate on here recently regarding who should start upfront for us in the playoffs, so I thought it would be interesting to see which combination of strikers has yielded the most goals for us across the Championship season.

As we know, Carlos has often made tactical substitutions as games have progressed, so these figures reflect the combination of players who were on the pitch at the time each goal was scored, rather than who started a game.

There are other factors to consider when picking a team of course, but it at least gives some clear pointers as to how we should set up if we want to score goals...

Forestieri’s goals:

On the left wing: 11

Alongside João: 3

Alongside Nuhiu: 1

Alongside Hooper: 0

Hooper’s goals:

Alongside Nuhiu: 6

Alongside Forestieri: 4

Alongside João: 3

João’s goals:

Alongside Hooper: 3

Alongside Forestieri: 2

Upfront on his own: 1

Alongside Nuhiu: 0

Nuhiu’s goals:

Alongside Forestieri: 1

Alongside Matias: 1

Alongside Hooper: 1

Alongside João: 0

Not really. It's flawed logic. So many variables that need to be taken into account. Quality of opposition, who's on the pitch providing for the strikers at the time, different dynamics at different stages of games, luck etc etc

It's interesting (even more interesting if shown alongside minutes on the pitch each combination has had), but it doesn't really prove anything.

I think that something to our advantage is that the playoffs don't differ from the way Carlos likes to play.

The teams he likes to set-up lean more towards scoring more than the opposition than ensuring we don't concede.

Brighton are more balanced in their approach but primarily do everything they can not to concede goals. This approach won't work too well when you need more than a draw. So they may have to change their system.

Anyone who can't see Hooper is more effective with either Joao or Dave next to him really must be watching something else

If we want to take an advantage to Brighton this is how we need to set up

It's a team game. It's about getting a result, not getting the best out of certain player. If we could do that we might as well set the team up to get the best out of McGugan.

Nobody can say Hooper/FF didn't work away at Forest, or Derby, or Hull, or Leeds at home. We played well and got results.

Carlos knows what he's doing. We wouldn't be 6th if he didn't. If he feels we're better starting a game with Hooper/FF up top, there's a good reason for it.

As I said, there are many other factors which can be taken into account, but there's no escaping the fact that our two most consistent goalscorers have scored four goals between them when paired as a front two, whereas they've scored 24 goals when played in different configurations. It doesn't prove anything, but it points to a pattern in our goalscoring.

Obviously, there may be other advantages of playing Hooper and Forestieri upfront together, such as allowing a preferred midfield four to start a game, but they haven't so far flourished in terms of goals scored when paired upfront alongside each other.

Hooper needs Joao or Nuhiu.

Forestieri scores all his goals from the left.

The answer is so plainly obvious. I really fancy our chances if we stick with the Cardiff attack.

Our best (or most effective) attacking line-up, in my opinion, consists of

-----------------------------------------------Forestieri

----------------Nuhiu-------Hooper------------------

I'm a tad concerned, based on Carlos' team selection yesterday, that against Brighton, he'll return to the Forestieri-Hooper front two, which just doesn't seem to work.

Concerned? Doesn't work?

Absolute crazy talk.

We're 6th. We've lost only 3 games this calendar year. Nuhiu started all 3, 2 alongside Hooper.

We score more goals with FF wide left but this is definitely a chicken and egg thing.

When we play FF left and a big striker we also dramatically change the team approach.

We play the back four and Lopez a lot higher up the pitch and we play a high pressing game to try and win the ball back in the opposites half .

This leads to more chances hence the stats above but Carlos obviously thinks we cannot play that way for 90 mins against the best teams without being a bit open.

I expect to see FF and Hooper up front.

Our performances, results & goal records seem to suggest, we are at our best when we play Forestieri out wide.

The fact he hasn't scored whilst playing up front with Hooper, backs this up does it not?

Sometimes, playing your best 11 players, isn't always the most effective team. And Carlos seems to have come to this conclusion of late.
