Safe Standing

Recommended Posts

Safe Standing is some sort of Joke, Standing was completely safe (almost) in the day. No fences ( allowing ease of exit if needed) Definitely  no pens ( allowing the crowd to spread and thin).

I have had a  good think about the German contraptions and see a problem with them in as much as, if someone is taken seriously ill how would the response of being able to battle through fixed structures compare with speed of access through a free standing crowd ? I'm not sure !

But as a traditionalist I would much prefer a free standing crowd that finds its own level.

The exact same way they do if someone is taken ill with seating?

Just do what the scousers do on their Kop and stand from beginning to end every game anyway.
Why bother with a designated section?

Because no one ever does that. I dont car either way, I just wish people would stand and stay stood, or sit and stay sat. Its the getting up and down when we get into the final third for no reason that winds me up

Think the club would do well to not lead the way in this. The press would rip them to shreds if they even suggested being the first to introduce safe standing.

I used to love standing on the kop but that is over 20 years ago now and my knees prefer sitting in the North Stand these days.

For a number of reasons, actually. Firstly standing up for sustained periods in seated areas is inherently unsafe – anyone falling forwards after, say, a goal has nothing to stop them, resulting in a domino effect which can result in the people in front getting injured.

Secondly, standing up in seated areas means the people behind you don't have a choice but to stand as well if they want to see the match. Not everyone wants to stand, particularly the elderly, while children often cannot see unless they are standing on seats – increasing danger. Unfortunately, in the situation you describe they aren't given a choice. A dedicated standing section would give fans who want to stand the opportunity to do so without damaging the experience for those who may not wish to.

Thirdly, a dedicated standing section would be a natural destination for those fans who already enjoy standing and singing. Rather than being split between stands they would combine in one area, increasing the atmosphere for everyone in the ground.

Finally, the standing section would also be an opportunity (you would hope) for the club to offer cheaper tickets on a regular basis, though this wouldn't necessarily be the case.

To address Nev's point about access for emergency services: safe standing is designed in rows the same as seats are now, with aisles of steps that do not have the barrier across them – in essence, it would be no better or worse to reach someone than it is now. Indeed, it may even be easier as there is more space on each row.

I think the opposite. Surely Hillsborough would be the best place to introduce it in England.

I can't see any negatives when it comes to safe standing.

If every row has a barrier front and back Surely its even safer than seating , especially if people are going to jump up for goals and near misses.

People think standing should never be introduced out of respect for those that died but imo safe standing still has those fans in mind.

Whilst I can see the logic we would be well advises to stay well clear. Remember certain groups taking offence at our use of those barriers (fences) v west ham in the cup? Even though they were as a segregation device outside the ground it was spun as fences being used in an fa cup game at that end of the ground = disrespectful on our part.

I said in one of the endless threads on Redevelop/Relocate the other day that by the time we do anything, there will be safe standing in England. I also said it would need to be very well established throughout the country before it was allowed at Hillsborough.

It's actually a really good idea.

In response to the emergency question earlier, it's actually easier to respond with SS because the rail seats fold up better than standard seats as they are integral to the rails and actually allow the rows to be wider. SS allows for about 30% more capacity in any given area.

More than any of this though, at every ground it is used, it becomes a focused area for the singers etc.

SS is coming though with everything in the news recently, it's going to take a while. It will probably come in initially at Emirates, Old Trafford etc because they get the attendance gains but it will definitely trickle down through the other clubs.
