Punishments for time wasting.

Recommended Posts

Is this still a thing? Or have the rules changed? Sometimes get the impression that the referees have been instructed to ignore it and just add the time on, no matter how long.

Can't remember the last time I saw anyone booked for time wasting, or even spoken to beyond an arm gesture.

And it is not just going against us either. FF took about 5 minutes to celebrate the goal on Saturday.

It needs to be cracked down on, because some teams use it as a cynical tactic from the off, not just when leading towards the end of a game when it's to be expected. Blackburn players kicked the ball away on several occasions last night without even a talking to, including when we were about to take a quick throw in.

Was it the Rotherham or Charlton game, the opposing keeper was told to hurry up by the ref at least 5 or 6 times in the first half alone and nothing happened, the only way to lessen it is to get the yellow card out if it happens after the first warning.

Charlton have done it for years, regardless of who the manager or players are

Remember when they went up from L1, they scored the first goal and Ben Hamer ( think he was their keeper then )  was the only player to touch the ball from that point on, must have spent 20 minutes over the course of the game kicking mud off his boots against the post

IMO there shouldn't be any punishment. The only thing that should happen is the Ref to stop his watch then restart it once back in play.

Doing this we supports then probably get a good 10 mins extra per game to watch.

No you don't because nothing is happening while time is being wasted. It also ruins the fluency of our game when we are really playing well and the team are just trying to disrupt it. Get flipping cards out and book the ball sacks.

The keeper last night was taking forever to take goal kicks until we went 2-1 up then he sprinted

after the ball and threw it into the 6 yard box and took his kick in about 5 seconds...tool

He wasn't as bad as Charltons keeper though who was time wasting in the 8th minute.

Only way to stop that is to out him in the book and if he carries on send him off

It's really starting to wind me up. Every team who comes here seems to do it. To be fair, we did it when we were leading, Westwood was taking his time etc but they did it from the first minute pretty much.

Refs never seem to punish players, keepers especially. They know that the most they'll get is a yellow. No ref would send a keeper off for doing it. All they get is the ref waving at em.

And last night. Where did 5 minutes come from?

It's very annoying and completely takes any tempo out of the game. TBH I find it annoying when Westwood takes for ever to take goal kicks. Personally I'd like to see refs booking players more for time wasting, because it just spoils the game.

Keepers are always told to do it to give the team a quick breather.

It does annoy me a bit how most teams (including ourselves) take ages celebrating every single goal these days.

It's usually a 10 player man hug, followed by all the individual hugs and high fives and then a gentle amble back to the half way line.

Probably takes us two minutes in celebrating time after every goal we score, and we score loads!

Only 2 minutes stoppage time in the first half when Loovens went down twice and was substituted on the 2nd one, 5 minutes at the end with no real stoppages apart from tackle on Lopez and only substitutions, does'nt add up, only thing i can think of is 30 seconds each for 3 goal celebrations, and  30 seconds each for 5 substitutions.

Edited by owls about that

More like an extra 40 minutes. It never seems like it at the time but I think the ball is generally only in play for 50-60% of a game, if not less.

I think if they are really persistent with it, the ref can poin at his watch.....but not until the 85th minute.

If the ref really wants to show he's the boss, if a keeper blatantly timewastes for the entire game he may occasionally show a yellow card in the 95th minute. That'll teach him.

blackburn 1 up keeper wastes time, 15 minutes later they are losing come the end of 90 minutes the ref adds on the time they have wasted and its to blackburns advantage ......should just book em and then use his discretion on what to add on.

I've said it before my pet peeve is throw ins. It takes an age sometimes either from a time wasting standpoint of walking away from the ball or the actual time it takes to get thrown. We are one of the worst offenders of this. There should be a thirty second rule, if you haven't taken it in that time the throw goes to the other team.
