Semedo

Recommended Posts

“Semedo has not been named on the team-sheet over the last few weeks but he travels with the team all the time,” Carvalhal told The Star. “He is in our 19 and is a player who always works with the same face and in the same way.

“Semedo never sulks and works very hard to help the team because he’s a player who loves Sheffield Wednesday.

“He works very hard, is a fantastic professional and gives a lot of energy to his colleagues.”

“In Portugal, we call it mística which means mystique,” said the Owls head coach. “It is when you have players in the dressing room who lead by example.

“People know they will probably not play too much but they are players who give examples inside the dressing room to others. It is very important you have these type of players in your dressing rooms. They might not be playing but they push the other players very hard.

“Not every player can do this. Players usually have a big ego but they put the collective first before themselves and Jose puts the team before himself. He is doing absolutely fantastic. He is important to me as Fernando Forestieri, Gary Hooper, Glenn Loovens and all the other players.”

It is quite clear that Jose is not quite good enough on the pitch for where we want to go, but his contribution can not be under-estimated. Would be great if we could keep him on after this season, even if not as a full time player.

We have seen it with teams that have been taken over in the past - they lose that heart and passion. Thankfully it doesn't seem like we are in any danger of that due to the players we have signed and Chansiri and Carlos themselves, but Semedo is the main man for passion and heart.

In reply to OP ,I hope they give him a new contract too. If Carlos says he is as important as them named then that's good enough for me. Absolute professional.

Sorry for me there is no room for sentimentality in football when offering contracts.

Harsh truth is he is no longer good enough on the pitch and contract is up at end of season. Be basically charity giving him another.

Just like Fergie keeping Giggsy and Scholesy on until they could barely walk... He knew they couldn't play every game but kept them on for what they represented. Winning. Semedo might be a little different, he represents a reminder of our bad times but appreciates where we are now. Sometimes, its not all about what someone can offer on the pitch, its all the things that go with it that are priceless.

I'm sure Semedo appreciates the kind words, but it's all very patronising towards him.

Carlos: "Jose you're crap, but a good example to the kids and a laugh in the dressing room, so stick around.."

At 31, he's plenty capable of going to another club and giving them 3yrs good service.

He's 31 and in good shape, probably got a good 4 years of playing left in him at least

Not good enough for us, so let him go with thanks and a big round of applause, he'll still be very useful to anybody in the division below.

Semedo is very selfless. A rare quality in this day and age.

Not sure if that alone warrants a new contract but I'm glad we have him around this season.

Team psychology and spirit is massively important and he is a big factor in that, even if he isn't playing.

Needs to play back in Portugal for a couple of years and then come back as coach for the youngsters. Sets a great example

Already involved with Miguel Llera's academy.

I can't seeing him moving far should he leave. Rotherham anyone? lol

If our manager thinks he is important to team spirit then it's not sentimental at all.  Also look at Leicester, a team that proves how important team spirit can be.  if he is happy to play less but play a role in a mentoring/coaching/leadership role then what is the problem in keeping him.  If we can't offer him a deal that he thinks is acceptable then he may well leave, but those talking like he has no value to this football club are wrong.... in my opinion.
