McGeady gets call up

Recommended Posts

Aiden McGeady has been named in Martin O’Neill’s Republic of Ireland squad.

The on-loan winger will be in the Eire squad that face two friendlies against Switzerland and Slovakia.

Both fixtures are scheduled to take place in Dublin’s Aviva Stadium, with the clash against Switzerland on Friday 25 and Slovakia on Tuesday 29 March.

The 29-year-old has made eight appearances for Wednesday since his loan switch from Everton and scored one goal which came in the Owls’ 3-0 win over Nottingham Forest.

Seriously?

The three keepers selected for Ireland are:

Darren Randolph - 3 Premier League appearances for West Ham this season

David Forde - 8 appearances in League 1 this season

Rob Elliot - 21 Premier League games this season

Fair enough for Westwood to be behind Elliot in the pecking order, but bizarre not to be chosen ahead of Randolph and Forde.

Can only imagine he doesn't show that much commitment when he is with that squad. Can't think of another reason for why he hasn't been picked.

hmmmmm, not sure about him, was the obvious choice to come off at half time IMO.

I called it on 40 that it'd be McGeady for Nuhiu.

But that's not due to McGeady being the obvious weak link. None of the 11 in the first half covered themselves in much glory. Wallace was equally as inaffectual as McGeady.

But it was obvious that Nuhiu needed bringing on & we need Wallace, if only for his set pieces.

That said, I'm yet to see a good home performance from him. Vs Birmingham he was apparently better & vs Forest he was apparently fantastic.

He may just be on of those players.

More of a sign that the Irish currently lack any sort of squad depth than his current form. He obviously still isn't match fit so the call up is probably a good thing for him and us in that it will go a long way to helping keep his spirits up and maybe inspiring more from him whilst he's with us.
