joelswfc
Good interview with him about the depression he has gone through. http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/sport/football/6981795/Sam-Hutchinson-reveals-the-mental-torture-he-endured-as-injuries-threatened-career.html

FlyingOwl
Probably as crucial to our side as Forestieri. Best defensive mid in the league
gurujuan
I think with Hutchinson, we must know the score by now He is going to miss games on a regular basis, and we need to compensate for that. In truth, we've had a lot more from him than I ever imagined we'd get, and he's a vital member of our squad. We do though, need someone who can step in and perform a similar roll. It's not overkill, we can always play two holding midfielders if the circumstances dictate, and anyway, Hutchinson can also play at the back. We're not talking about bringing in someone who can only win the ball, they have to be able to play as well. We probably envisaged Melo being that player, but we've known for a long time that we won't be seeing him this season
fife_owl
The way things are going just now, I fear Hutch will get two first half yellows tomorrow.

If he's even fit How many times have we had these clean bill of health pronouncments, only to for the players to be mysteriously omitted from the squad. Hopefully he will play, and manage to avoid a second yellow

matthefish2002
Would sum up Hutchinson as good enough when fit but never fit enough. Mistake giving him a new contract when we are lucky if he plays 50% of the games.
paulyates
He was fit at Preston but wasn't included in the match day squad, first name on the team sheet for me when he is available.
paulyates
Brighton are a passing side and not particularly physical. We needed his presence on Saturday against a Warnock side who did what they always do, run, chase, press the ball and get stuck in! Bannan and Lee really struggled to cope with their midfield. I know what you're saying, but don't be fooled, those three in midfield, Kayal, Stephens and Sidwell can certainly mix it. They give Brighton the platform to play. FlyingOwl
He looks particularly gorgeous in that article, I must say. Good of him to raise the issue of depression in football. Too many people quick to quash that idea due to the 'amount of money they make' etc etc.

Owl999
I like Hutchinson, I can't help but think that he wouldn't get half the injuries and certainly yellow cards if he was played at his true position of Centre Back .
Holmowl
...with him in the squad on Saturday we would have hammered Rotherham...we NEED a quality back-up for him ... Seen several posts like this. I think Hutch is a good midfielder (but a better CB) but I dont think he would have made a massive difference, other than to say in hindsight that Lee had a stinker. But Carlos has to pick his side at 2pm on Saturday, not on Sunday morning. I dont think we lost the midfield. Rotherham largely by passed it anyway, prefering a punt or a long wide ball. There were very few 50:50 central midfield battles that I recall. In the second half we totally bossed the midfield, the possession and the chances. What was missing was quality passing and quality crossing, not bottle. And what conceded the few chances they did get was poor defending wide. matthefish2002
Not 26 appearances out of 34, according to the official site its 26 out of 42 League and cup games in total. Have not got time to look at every game but would also say a fair percentage of his appearances have finished early when he has gone off injured (Birmingham away he went off after about 25mins IIRC) Although if being balanced some of the non appearances especially in the cup he would have been rested. It's clear that we need, or needed, another player with similar attributes. At the start of the season, we knew we had to manage his appearances, and we also knew that the player, perhaps brought in with that in mind, Melo, was not going to play this season. For me, we should have brought someone in on a season long loan.
