robswfc
Especially first half, why oh why were we knocking it long to Nuhiu?! Most of the time you do that its gonna result in a 50-50 challenge in midfield, but with Lee and Bannan there we were never going to outcompete Rotherham for those type of loose balls. Add to that that most of Westwood's kicks are garbage and Nuhiu is much better with ball played to feet anyway. What have we been using the lights on the pitch for other than to try to play attractive football? We simply played straight into their hands. We should have played it out from the back EVERY time, drawn them out with quick passing in midfield, and used our players' superior movement to carve them open. Instead we turned it into a blood and thunder derby match- Colin must have been rubbing his hands with glee. Just don't get what we were trying to do at all? Holmowl
I thought we mixed it up ok rob. Tried to play it around sometimes, and at other times the long ball. The problem was that our long balls and our final pass in the neater moves were both awful. It was quality of execution rather than tactics imo. I was also impressed that he went 433 as soon as half time, and then what looked like 343 when he took Hunt off. It nearly worked. We crushed them second half, but couldnt deliver quality final passes. For me, tactics were fine. Maybe apart from the slow start. Need more tempo and positivity from the off. robswfc
Some games its a good idea to mix it up. Against Rotherham at home, with NW as their manager and the best passing side we've had in 15 years, we should have tried to keep the ball and not let them have a sniff. And especially first half it was more hoof than pass IMO. How many times did Westwood play it to one of our full backs, and how many did he hoof it? My guess would be something like 1:20 Edited March 6, 2016 by robswfc
robswfc
According to here. Westwood 29 long balls, of which 8 were 'accurate'. Imagine instead of hitting it long we'd played it out from the back 20 times, would have been a totally different game.https://www.whoscored.com/Matches/959039/LiveStatistics/England-Championship-2015-2016-Sheffield-Wednesday-Rotherham

Totally agree, long balls v a Warnock side just plays in to there hands.
markg
Colin got his tactics spot on. Forced lee and bannan out of the game and gave us more space out wide where he didn't mind us having it. Lee and bb needed help. Id have brought Lopez on
matthefish2002
Was saying in the pub after the game that we didn't seem to be expecting Rotherham to play those tactics when I could have told then what a Warnock teams tactics would be. Thought we missed Hutchinson more then FF. Maybe should have played Semedo but we his last few performances I doubt we will see him again if his contact is up at the end of the season. Saying all that I did think Rotherham had the rub of the green a couple of times on Saturday.

Just don't get what we were trying to do at all? what IF colin was smart enough to have told them "their at home, don't get drawn out into open play in m/f, defend in numbers at the back, make them break you down"? if opposition attackers press our defence when on the ball, and the ball breaks, it's in our danger area... multiple defensive and midfield passes won't get us the ball into scoring areas... for that we need a 'decisive/telling' ball... we (for me) need a 'proper' c/f, of big dave's build, but a proper aerial threat, reasonably decent across the ground, and capable of scoring 15+ goals at season... add to that a wingman who can beat his fullback and competently cross a ball... i'd like to add a proper 'werewolf' or two to the midfield, and get shut of the 'lightweights'... other than that, it would be just a case of strengthening the backline where necessary, ie, r/b, c/b, etc... dorian gray
They had a "rob" on our green, but agree Colin's plan worked, but why CC did not know this would happen, I have no idea it's not like colin's about to change his attitude and approach at his age is he? i figure carlos did expect them to be 'competitive' in m/f, and thus thought he could bypass that 'obstacle' to nuhiu, but dave's not dominant in the air, and you need to get men forward from m/f to WIN THE SECOND (50/50) BALL, big problem here then... ask yourself in all honesty is a tiptap lightly built m/f 'suitable' for a derby game? i remember one team turning up with a 'must win footballing side' with an' 'all singing, all dancing forward line', and an outstanding south american ball player in m/f... they were 'cocksure' of victory too... it was 'boxing day' and they were 'the pigs'... coopswfc76
We needed more tip tap and work the ball out wide but to the bye line not 30yards from it and try to cross(Bannan) as its meat and Drink to there defenders which we should have known. He changed it in 2nd half going 3 4 3 but only Wallace stayed wide were as on other side Bannan kept drifting inside clogging the play up then ignoring Pudil on overlap so just crossed from deep. Hopefully everybody has learnt from Saturday Managers/Players and it doesn't happen again.
