TK-Owl
Is probably a long way off in this country. But when I see bits about Dortmund and other large European clubs with their standing terraces it makes me envious we don't have the same.It will have been brought up on here before, and I have a feeling I know what at least some of the responses will be like now I've brought this up again, but if it became an option, how many out there would actually prefer the kop to become "safe standing"?I have a season ticket there and would way prefer it as standing.Whos in another stand but would switch for a proper standing area? Does anyone think we could ever get back to days of old with scenes like this... (But obviously with a roof n that, I might want an atmosphere, but I want to stay dry!) Owl in Nottingham
Love that picture. Snow on the pitch......is that the FA cup match against Arsenal. Where a few naughty boys snowballed Pat Jennings?
Guest
If it happens it will be NOTHING like that. The stadium you mentioned in Germany doesn't have a traditional Kop style terrace it has specialised seating that locks up to allow two to stand where the seat is at certain games, behind a guard rail. The seat/standing position is ticketed, you cannot wander around and clump together with your mates as such. It is called rail seating, not really safe standing. You're never getting a terrace back, not even ze Germans have that.
Owl in Nottingham
I like the hump back shape to the Kop. We should have a new roof without the pillars ......and get Norman Foster to design a humpback roof.

ChapSmurf
I would definitely welcome safe standing. Let's face it, we don't sit down at away matches and there is never an issue. 5500+ safely stood at Preston. 2000+ will hopefully be safely standing tonight. Ze Germans have show us how to do this and as far as I am aware they have had no issues. We just need to drag our FA out of the 1980s.
Belfast Owl 2
Can't you still stand at a few grounds Brenford , Exeter and Yevoil? So what is the difference between that and other clubs?

The higher up the league system you go the bigger the crowds are and the stricter the seating requirement. Clubs moving up through the leagues have to be all seating within a set time period. This is nothing new, it's been in place many years.

The things is though, the bigger the crowds, the harder it is to enforce all fans sitting down. I mean were 5500+ going to be thrown out for not sitting down? Not arguing your point by the way because it is valid but the fans are already standing at away grounds safely, so why not at least review the policy and see if a compromise can be reached? ChapSmurf
This at Dortmund. download (1).jpg This will restrict the numbers of people allowed in to the safe standing areas, which means the safe standing can be better controlled. Unlike the previous policy of "aye, get a couple more thousand in there" type situation. Seems like the sensible compromise to me.

Not arguing your point by the way because it is valid but the fans are already standing at away grounds safely, so why not at least review the policy and see if a compromise can be reached? The compromise is to install rail seating like in Germany. That relies on a system of tickets assigned to seats and not sold at the gate and to unlock and put down those seats for games where standing is not allowed. When fans see that the myth of standing on terraces in Europe is really just rail seating it becomes less popular as it is restrictive and expensive to fit. British fans need to be educated that terraces are never coming back and accept that and work with clubs like Bristol and Celtic who have pushed for trial rail seating small sections of a couple of thousand. The days of rocking up and paying a few quid to stand on a concrete hill are over.

Completely free standing is not going to happen is it, I think we all know that, but the railings are the kind of thing I'm talking about. Unlike the previous policy of "aye, get a couple more thousand in there" type situation. Seems like the sensible compromise to me. I much prefer away days where everyone stands anyway and the point is if you are in a section with the rail seating there are "controls" in place just like Smurf is saying that would allow the stand to be restricted. Cant see why you couldnt have a season ticket there if there are "seats". maybe you arent assigned as specific spot on that stand, you just take what you can get when you turn up? Perhaps that would be a little too messy.. who knows. Just spitballing really.

I'm pretty certain that seats are allocated still in Germany, to stop people randomly wandering all into favourite zones and causing overcrowding.
