Due to the power cuts this game was played on a Wednesday afternoon. I and over 37,000 more wagged it of school or called in sick to work to be there. I remember Tommy Craig shadowing Pele for the last five minutes of the match and as soon as the whistle blew he was swapping shirts with him. Apparently he'd asked the ref to give him the nod that the game was almost over so he could grab his prize.

How did he play?

From what I remember he hardly touched the ball, was carrying an injury.  I was in the uncovered seats next to their dugout in the hope of getting an autograph.  Great occasion but the match wasn't up to much.   I still think Pele and Best were the greatest players ever though and I've seen em both!

I was at the game, can't remember a thing about it except that I was on the Leppings Lane end and went to the dentists straight after. Don't know if we got the day off school or we excused ourselves. That referee is Gordon Hill though.

Our headmaster warned everybody about not attending school on that day.

My Dad said, 'If I find out that you've been to school and not gone to see Pele they'll be trouble.'  He was working so I went with my uncle Alan.

Never seen that picture before , ( the one from the kop looking towards the NW corner). Special for me, the one and only time , I have been in that bottom corner. Front row, by the corner flag could probably see myself if I zoomed it in the quality was better. Amazing.

I asked my dad "why are we stood here"? we normally sat  at the back of the lower south stand

Then Pele came for a short corner and he was no more than 5 feet away from me !

Dont remember any school issues , but we lived in Swinton so wouldn't have been any big deal.

Brilliant !

31Dec1966 I think you're right that he (Pele) was carrying an injury. They had played Aston Villa a few days before and he'd picked up a knock.

Pele!

Probably the best player ever and certainly the best player I've ever seen, shading George Best and Bobby Moore.

Pele had a tough time in England. He got a right old battering against Portugal in the '66 World Cup in the last qualifying match. Brazil lost and went home before the knock out stages.

However, he was part of the great Brazil side of 1970 (Gerson, Carlos Alberto, Rivelino [some goal celebration he had], Jairzinho, Tostao...)  which beat England 1-0 (England were defending Champions and still had a very good side) and eventually went on to cruise past Italy in the Final.

As previously stated, the club arranged the fixture to repay us for our support, following relegation. They then proceeded to double the admission price for us. I lost half a day's pay to watch the game and then had to fork out twice what I normally paid, just to watch the football equivalent of the Harlem Globetrotters. Made you feel really appreciated

The funniest thing at our school was that the headmaster caved in and allowed everyone to go, BUT the following week the Blunts had a cup replay against West Ham and their fans were expecting the same treatment. To their dismay he wouldn't allow them time off, wee wee taking aplenty ensued

IIRC didn't Myers Grove allow the kids time off to go on condition they made up the lost time following Saturday Morning (no doubt allowing teachers to attend!)?

Sadly I was at Abbeydale Grange and we got no time off.
