HirstWhoScoredIt
Ron Atkinson's Sheffield Wednesday were on an 18 match unbeaten run and looked like going on to secure promotion back to the top tier. They got drawn away v Cambridge United in the FA Cup 5th round, whom were playing in the third tier. Wednesday lost 4-0 but as we all know still went on to get promotion. I know most won't want to hear it but our chances of getting promoted increased today. We've already played 5 league cup games, added to our 49 Championship matches and our 2 FA Cup matches we'll have played 56 matches by the end of the season anyway. Unlike 1991 when we won the League Cup, it is no longer possible for a Championship club to win a cup competition. A cup run does you no favours at all when trying to get promoted. Indeed 6 of the last 9 teams to get promoted from the Championship went out in the third round. Only Leicester went further than the fourth round, losing in the Fifth. This is a long tough division, a cup run and promotion no longer mix. Sorry that's not what the romantics want to hear.

Utah Owl
Agree with everything except the bit about a Championship side cannot possibly win one of the cups. It will happen again one day until then we can be proud of the fact that we were the last non-top flight club to do it. Difficult yes, but impossible absolutely not. Morepork
In football there will always be days like today, fact of life. Frustrating, yes. Made me grumpy this morning for a couple of hours, of course. Still plenty to cheer about, absolutely. We move on as they say.
The Night-Owl
Plenty of teams get turned over by lower league opposition in the Cups in the early rounds. It won't define our season or be the end of our season. We have to take it on the chin and learn from our mistakes and roll our sleeves up if we want to make the play-offs. Even in successful seasons there will be the few disappointments or the odd dips in form. But what increases your chances is how you respond to set backs. I remember us having a long run of draws in the League back in that promotion season and thinking we won't go up but we rolled our sleeves up and eventually made it. There were miserable periods in the two promotions back to this level too but we still made it. There will be set backs even in the good seasons. There's still a long way to go in order for this to be a successful or promotion season but this defeat isn't the end of the world. We've still got a chance this season and more importantly in the bigger picture we've got a bright future.

bryan1966
Was at Cambridge that day. Could it believe what we were seeing. One of only a handful of bad days though in an ultimately fantastic season. The 83-84 promotion was my favourite cause I was just 17 but 90-91 was very special with a first trip to Wembley. Finney on the Wing
I was there too, stood on the concrete steps that had been gritted, in the cold and watching the endless cuddly toys fly over head spraying everyone with snow and grit. Yep, Dublin (and his strike partner Robert Taylor, was it?) was a handful that day and remember applauding Cambridge off as they passed us at the end. Minor blip in the best ever season so far, for me.
