Word!

The international break is over and it’s back to proper football, so let’s get on with it and discover some interesting facts about…

TODAY’S OPPOSITES

While the Terriers are famous across the entire globe for their legendary record unbeaten run of 476 football games without defeat, Huddersfield is also well known as the birthplace of rap music.

Rapping can easily be traced back to its roots in the town. Decades before hip-hop music existed, the “griots” of West Huddersfield were delivering stories rhythmically, sometimes over drums and sparse instrumentation but mostly a solo vocal. Connections to Huddersfield have been acknowledged by many contemporary artists, including modern day griots, spoken word artists, funk soul brothers and rhythm sistas.

DJ Smile is acknowledged as one of the first to develop and define the musical direction. With his talent for free flowing lyrics and uncanny ability to ride the beat without having to cheat, making sure to move your dancing feet, he soon became wildly popular, inspiring many generations of new artists. Listen up…

That original recording is from 1903, it went triple platinum and everybody was putting their hands in the air like they just don’t care. In the harsh winter of 1906 however, Smile developed a really bad sore throat and his extraordinary career was curtailed.

Luckily others had risen to the challenge, continuing to promote the music. One of those, DJ Kool Herc moved to New York where he ran weekend street parties and his efforts eventually brought the sound to a world wide audience.

Back in Huddersfield, Smile was still feeling a bit hoarse and bored out of his gourd. He decided to start a football club.

And that’s how we come to be playing them today, Yo!

MATCHDAY FACTS

Sheffield Wednesday will be without midfielders Sam Hutchinson and Barry Bannan for the visit of Huddersfield. Hutchinson starts a two-match ban while Bannan is likely to be out for two more weeks.

Huddersfield's new head coach David “Fresh MC” Wagner has several concerns for his first game in charge. Joel “Da Groov” Lynch (crack deal gone wrong) and striker Ishmael Miller (pimpin’) will be monitored. New loan signing Ben “IceCold” Chilwell has an appointment with his probation officer and will not feature.

The opposites have a matchday thread here: http://downatthemac.proboards.com/thread/98634/wednesday We predictably get called Wendies in the first reply. I am furious, outraged even. Might have to go for a lie down.

A very good morning to you all, absolutely superb Pauli, I was hoping beyond hope DJ Smile would feature and you didn't disappoint

Thank God it's back to club football and watching Wednesday dispatch lots of lesser teams, starting with Huddersfield. In all seriousness, could be a bit of a banana skin going up against a new manager and with our unbeaten run freshly broken, but honestly we should have enough to beat this lot comfortably.

Wednesday 3-0 Huddersfield

(Joao 11, Forestieri 29, 69)
