30,000+ - The remarkable run continues

Recommended Posts

I think it is always difficult comparing crowds from nearly 1/4 century ago to today.

Football has changed massively in that time, a lot if our fans will not even remember us in the early 1990's.

In the early 1990's teams like Chelsea used to get about 14,000 for a run of the mill league game and Arsenal about 23,000.

But other clubs who will probably never win the league also got much smaller gates in the early 1990's then they do now.

Newcastle used to get crowds as low as 13,000 for some games, Aston Villa regularly got below 20,000.

I can remember being at Everton v Wednesday for a Christmas game and crowd only being about 16,000.

I don't think for a bread and butter league game Wednesday would sell out in the Championship, We probably would for an end of season game if promotion was riding on it like the Wycombe game though.

But think if we were in the Premier League we would sell out nearly every home game.

This is why we need 30,000 + there for the rest of the season

Unbeaten in our last 13 matches despite the fact we were utterly poo for most of it.

Even before that our record outside the top flight when getting over 30,000 is staggering.

18/2/06 v Pigs - Lost 1-2 - 33,439

1/4/01 v Pigs - Lost 1-2 - 38,433

1/11/00 v Pigs - won 2-1 - 32,283

8/5/91 v Bristol City - won 3-1 - 31,706

4/5/91 v Millwall - won 2-1 - 30,278

27/4/91 Barnsley - won 3-1 - 30,392

13/4/91 M'boro - won 2-0 - 30,598

27/2/91 v Chelsea - won 3-1 - 34,669

3/11/90 v Oldham 2-2 - 34,669

7/5/84 v Man City 0-0 36,673

19/11/83 v Newcastle - won 4-2 - 41,134

24/11/81 Barnsley - 2-2 - 30,861

3/5/80 Carlisle - 0-0 - 32,724

26/12/79 Pigs - 4-0 - 49,309

So basically, in the past 36 years, when we have been outside of the top flight and got over 30,000 - Sheff Utd are the ONLY team to beat us.

It just shows what a difference an intimidating home support can make.

Weren't bad before that run of 13 matches started either.

Chelsea and Arsenal have both gone on to win the Premier League though - something we will never do

you can't say that you never know how things will pan out for the future Ramone, you could have said the same about Leicester they are flying now

I went to both Liverpool games. Away was an anti climax but didn't we do them 2-0 at Anfield the season after?

I remember another 49k v liverpool a few seasons later. Not sure what year.

But to be fair they must have had 15k fans in the ground.

I can't believe we wont fill the ground again.

Some people underestimate the draw of the premier league and how many some teams bring. But I suppose it's hard to imagine for younger fans.

Am pretty sure we took 15,000 to Anfield for the replay? I'm certain i have an old match report confirming this.

Am also certain it was Hirst who scored our goal in front of the Kop?

Was a cracking following from Coventry that day.

Not sure 'cracking' is the correct term. We played them at Highfield the week before and the whole gate was around 9,000. Week later in the cup the bar stewards brought around 13,000 to Hillsborough. Cvnts

I suspect If we ever go back up.... Having a proper old school football stadium, with big stands close to the pitch.... might well be a big advantage.,

Arsenal shrunk. I can imagine other teams doing the same......

Arsenal are right pampered fannies and Hillsborough kicked them square in the sack.

To say we are a one and a half club city i don't think we do too bad tbh,  and just think if the sty dwellers didn't exist our ground wouldn't cope with the amount of fans every other week

Rotherham aren't in Sheffield though! lol

They completely filled the Lepp, top, bottom and corner, 15,000 cracking following!

Why even mention their poor crowds at Highfield road when it just emphasises even more their cracking away following that day.

Cracking post though mate, now crack on before i crack thi!

It will be interesting when we play in the PL to see what crowds we can get and find out whether we are as big a club as many of our supporters seem to think or are just a medium sized club playing in an oversized stadium, not sure which personally, hope we will find out next season.

NB getting 38,000 at home against Man Utd, Man City and Liverpool does not count as proof positive of 'Big clubness'. lol

I remember a game in the 80's and afterwards I'm sure the Green Un headline was simply the attendance and read 50 something thousand. Seem to think it was against Liverpool or Arsenal but I can't find any trace of it in my complete record book

Have I dreamt it?

I think it may have been Liverpool game when they decided to put semi final tickets on sale for our trip to Villa Park v Everton. Now I thought we were up near the 50k mark that day but records show 37k+. However, Kop emptied somewhat when they stupidly announced at half time that tickets for semi were going on sale !

I never did figure that one out.

Yes you dreamt it.

The capacity was under 50,000 through the the whole of the 80's.

Maybe you're thinking of the Liverpool game that was about 49,500 in the mid 80's, that match was a total sell out and beat the Boxing Day attendance in 1979 by about 100 or so.
