TODAY'S OPPOSITES

It was the 1970’s and pop star Freddie Mercury was riding the peaks of the charts, earning tons and tons of money. Mountains of it. But Freddie had a problem - the Inland revenue was threatening to take a huge chunk of the cash. He needed a plan, and quickly.

Chatting to his band mates, it was bass player John Deacon who came up with an idea to buy a tract of land near London and populate it with elephants, giraffes, crocodiles and lions. This wonderful place would also remind Freddie of his native Zanzibar in case he was feeling homesick. They could also sell safaris to American dentists - another nailed on money spinner.

A few months later, the plan became reality. Loads of wild animals were imported and several men employed to look after them. A glorious summer followed but most importantly, the tax man had been thwarted.

That September, things stated to get complicated. It was unusually cold and was going to get colder. The animals could no longer roam about outside as they were used to the much warmer African weather. Freddie decided to put the animals into heated stables over the winter. The whole place could be run with a minimal number of staff and the men he had employed were no longer needed until next summer. They decided to form a football team to keep themselves occupied.

Freddie agreed to continue paying the wages so they named themselves Queen's Park Rangers in his honour and that’s how we come to be playing them today.

IMPORTANT

QPR’s hooligans go by the name of Bushbabies. They catch insects on the ground or ****** them out of the air. They are fast, agile creatures. As they bound through the thick bushes of Landan, they fold their delicate ears back to protect them. They also fold them during a fight with other football firms.

They have nails on most of their digits, except for the second toe of the hind foot, which bears a silk scarf. Their diet is a mixture of insects and other small animals, fruit, and tree gums. So be careful tonight.

MATCHDAY FACTS

QPR striker Jay Emmanuel-Thomas is set to keep his place as Charlie Austin remains out after being bitten by a monkey. Winger Jamie Mackie has a similar injury, but off a zebra. Gabriele Angella could feature in defence after James Perch's red card against Birmingham.

A late call will be made on Sheffield Wednesday forward Marco Matias and on-loan midfielder Alex Lopez is absent. But Carlos Carvalhal has options in Lewis McGugan, Jose Semedo and Jeremy Helan, as well as striker Atdhe Nuhiu.

The Oops are unbeaten in seven home games against the Owls (W3 D4), last losing to them at Loftus Road in October 2000.

Wednesday have found the net in 10 of their last 11 meetings with QPR, including each of the last seven.

No side has won more points from losing positions than QPR this season (7, level with Brentford). However, Rangers have also dropped a league-high 10 points from winning positions.

The Owls have kept just one clean sheet in their last 10 away games (W2 D4 L4).

Speaking of the Clash, my first political argument as a London resident was with Joe Strummer he lived on the 15th floor of Trellic Tower. Argued you couldn't be working class if you didn't live In a tower block.

Not too far from Trellic Tower was Scrubbs Lane, the setting for the 'Steptoe & Son' TV series.

As you got to the bottom of Scrubbs Lane the vista opened up.... On your right was the infamous HMP Wormwood Scrubs. Turning direct left would take you down to the BBC Wood Lane Studios. Straight over in the 1970's you would see the White City Stadium. Slightly to the left is the South Africa Estate and Nestled just beyond is the Loftus Road Stadium. Walk by the ground and you will come to Shepherd Bush High Street or High Road or the like where you will find the overground tube station.

If the QPR are playing particularly well they have a round of 'Come on you R's' on 71 minutes. But if it's atmosphere you're after I would suggest back tracking on our little journey and call in at Kensall Rise Cemetery.

Interesting one Pauli.

Continuing the animal theme from Saturday brings back memories of Johnny Morris on Animal Magic and the elephant who defecated live during Blue Peter and then dragged its poor handler thru the mess.  John Noakes nearly wet himself laughing and Valerie Singleton could barely watch.  Not sure what Peter Purves was doing.  All of which I guess would have been filmed at the old BBC centre at Shepherds Bush just round the corner from the QPR ground.

Anyhow, another point tonight and I’d be happy.
