A section of Bristol City supporters are planning to miss their first game back in the Championship over what they call "astronomical" ticket prices.

Away supporters who travel to Sheffield Wednesday on the opening day will be charged up to £39 for a ticket.

"For some of us, it is a matter of principle," said a statement from the Bristol City Supporters' Club & Trust.

"It is going to hurt to do this, but the Supporters' Club & Trust has decided not to attend this game."

Bristol City won the League One title in April to secure their return to English football's second tier following a two-year absence.

The Robins have received an initial allocation of 1,068 tickets  in the Leppings Lane End at Hillsborough on Saturday, 8 August.

Other ticket boycotts and protests

Liverpool fans boycotted their match at Hull City in April of 2015 over the £50 ticket price.

Manchester City supporters did not attend a game against Arsenal in 2013 because of the £62 admission fee.

Arsenal and Liverpool fans protested about ticket prices of up to £64 before their match in 2015 at Emirates Stadium.

West Bromwich Albion supporters threatened a boycott over the £56 entry fee to watch the Baggies play at Manchester City in 2015.

The Supporters' Club & Trust say that, along with travel and expenses, the ticket price is "too expensive".

The statement added: "Nobody's calling for a boycott, we just think it is a step too far.

"We think many City fans will vote likewise and choose not to go. Maybe in that way Sheffield Wednesday will get the message that this is unreasonable. After all, it will only cost Reading fans £25 when they go to Hillsborough. Where's the sense in that?"

To be honest away fans have had it good at hillsborough for years, one of the best views in the ground and because of league rules all for the same price as someone sat on row 1 of the Kop! Away teams get access to a large ticket allocation, meaning they can generate a lot of noise, it's been a disadvantage for us. I prefer we give teams a smaller allocation just like we get at most grounds, the cost now reflects the view they get, it's a shame those stupid league rules mean we are paying the same!

Yes £39 is too steep for Bristol at home, but it's the first game so attracts a premium and if it was a crunch game towards end of the season they'd be here in droves!

I am sooooo looking forward to the first game of the season.

It's always sunny isn't it?

The pitch is going to look magnificent.

Get into pub early for beers and see all football folk you haven't seen all summer.

We always do something afterwards too so going to be a reight day.

Anyone else looking forward to it? Just a couple of weeks to go now.....wonder what the season will bring!?

Are you on drugs?

Ignorant masses...

Both insults and you know it.

Hilarious you started the WAWAW thread and act the hypocrite.

Anyway I'll leave you to it.

No idea what the any of that means tbh.

The WAWAW thread was aimed at those who seem to think it's OK to belittle Wednesdayites who can't afford to see their team any more.

You saying I'm a hypocrite suggests I've done exactly the same thing.

Name an example where I've done that?

Seriously, have you got any evidence to back up your lie?

Derby is 30 minutes away on the train.

So actually the ticket price would have had a much more significant influence on the total price...

They will be paying ~£92.90 for the train, so if the tickets are £39, total cost is £131.90.

If we had sold them tickets for £30 instead, the total cost would be £122.90.

It's a 7% difference.

Would probably be 5% difference by the time you add a tram ticket, beers, food...

Would they really have come? Or would they have looked at the train price, and that would be the reason for a boycott instead?

Edit, realise people will question the figures...

At the end of the day it's in the national media and it's bad publicity and may cause fans of other clubs to decide not to come to Hillsborough this season even though the chances are it  wont cost £39. Other problem is nobody including us know what it might cost yet.

You're presuming they will come by train. I'd guess the majority would come by road either in a car or by supporters coaches at a lot lower cost
