SallyCinnamon
That may be the case, but is he worth the money Watford are asking? If we could get 3-4 good players from abroad that all improve the team, for the same price as Lewis, wouldn't that be better business? Proven quality at this level who has done it for us before. Carried the team at times last season. I'd do everything to get him back personally if this chairman is serious about promotion.

sheffield_dave
people on this forum talk like Wednesday have never entered the foreign markets before... Let's never bother again then. After all, Pecnik didn't work for us so let's never sign a foreign player again.
parkerowl
We'd be lucky to get a player from abroad who is better than McGugan. Yeah because English players really do lead the way in world football, as the U21's demonstrated recently.

No it's not that It's people acting as though the foreign markets are something we aren't privvy to and that we've been just buying English players for the past 25 years, when that simply isn't the case, we have had more than our fair share of foreign players and as we've seen, they don't usually work out better than English players. I am not saying English players are guarenteed success, but when you see people saying we're better off signing some random Pole than McGugan I think it's madness. Saxondale
It's weird how McGugan's reputation keeps on growing and growing on here. Anyone would think it was a world class player we are talking about. As a fan base we like to get fixated on signing certain players.

So cheap gambles on unknown foreign players will definitely 100 per cent work and get Sheffield Wednesday promoted because England are poo at international level. Got ya. SallyCinnamon
For the record I don't mind going into the foreign market, as long as they are good enough to take us to the next level. But we aren't going to suddenly start playing like Barcelona because we've signed a player from the German second division. A player like McGugan not only has experience at this level but has performed for us before. Need to sign him up.

devonshire_owl
Why do people keep banging on about "English" Football players? Two of our best players over the past 15 years where Irish (Whelan) and Northern Irish (Brunt). Even our legendary captain Bullen wasn't English. There is more to the world than England, and when it comes to football the English are severely lagging behind the rest of Europe.

I'm just saying he's not the be all and end all. Yes he was quality but he's not exactly irreplaceable, by any means.
