Guest Bournemouth Owl
Do you think we will ever get back to signing the players like we did in the 90s
Road Runner
Think we had Jaap Stam on trial as well but wasn't deemed good enough, add to that not matching Shearer bid, refusing to pay 3 million for a Man Utd reserve in Beckham and also refusing Roy Keane a trial as we just signed Chris Bart-Williams. Could have has a decent team
airborne_rat_of_s6
I think he was at Southampton at the time, he went to Blackburn for £5 million, Hurst and Shearer what a partnership.... Seems ridiculous now that we wouldn't pay the extraParticularly when we paid £3M for the likes of sinton and hinchcliffe. They were 💩💩💩
owl-zat
We also offered Man United 3 million for Beckham, Who probably couldn't stop laughing when they put the phone down..... I seem to remember that was after he'd seen him play against us in a reserve match and at the time Beckham had yet to make his debut for Man-Ure so £3M was a MASSIVE sum of money at the time for an unknown with no first team experience (or at least very little as don't know it it was before or after he'd been on loan to Preston was it?) BRADDO
Remember that we also turned down a £4 million bid from Man U for Hirst which would have been the record transfer fee at the time. Ambition and exciting times
lanzaroteowl
I remember some Blunts at the time complaining that they sold him to Dirty Leeds for around £200,000 less than what we offered. Saying the extra money would have come in handy and it might have dispelled the notion that they were only Dirty Leeds feeder club
Utah Owl
Pretty sure he went for £3.3m. Think we were just outgunned by Blackburn's mad spending around that time. According to Shearer's Wiki page it was 3.6 million. As usual we missed the boat.
Davidioso
Not true, I heard the stumbling block was that Francis had only seen him play in a pig sty and never on grass!
matthefish2002
I think I remember reading a the time United were in all sorts of financial trouble and it was them who contacted us about signing Deane. We agreed a fee but it was the player who turned us down. Think he was a good player so its a shame we didn't see him play for us.
York_Owl
When was that then? We needed another top striker for the 91-92 season. Francis signed Jemson! Then turned down Cantona saying we didn't need another striker (around Jan 92) then signed Bright a few months later!
dani_armo
we should have just bought the pigs instead and closed them down

Rogerwyldesmullet
I recall Richie Barker saying that the bid for Deane was linked to Blackburns bid for Warhurst. Big Brian refused to come so Warhurst ended up with a new contract instead. Trouble is, defenders had worked him out so Tricky shipped him anyway and brought in Andy Sinton (his love child) from QPR. Fergie fancied Hirst and that deal could have funded a Shearer deal. I would identify these errors, along with Cantona as the start of our decline. In other words, Tricky Trev blew it. Sad but true. I think the glaring mistake out of that lot was the Cantona debacle. Shame Deane didnt join us. Hirst and Deane up top with Cantona sat behind them would have been some strike force.... GY-owl.4
Deane was over rated imo.
Hack-Abusi
i think Deane would have been a very handy acquisition for us regardless of him playing for the grunts - lets not have that fact cloud our judgement as it normally does on here i can also remember hearing about the Jaap Stam trial or something, but he was what, about 19 at the time? was it Big Ron that turned him down? not sure i also heard we were offered Marcelo Salas for £1m but he was unproven or something so we turned that down too
owlse
we also placed bids for shearer and a certain David Beckham , just before he scored his wonder goal from the halfway line for man united, when i think he was about 19 i was truly in the know back then Edited February 27, 2015 by owlse
Mollymae's Dad
I always wanted Gareth Southgate from Palace before his transfer to Villa We need to hire mystic meg as a scout in my opinion If we could see into the future.....would we follow Wednesday???? Too right Eat more Tuna and get behind OUR club
Interminan
Bright was better. Far more intelligent. I reckon if you asked Waddle and Sheridan they'd pick Bright to play with over Deane 10 times out of 10. Considering they never played with Deane their going to say Bright i suppose.
