areNOTwhatTHEYseem
After watching Zayette's solid performance at centre back against Brighton, I was wondering what role we see Dielna fulfilling from now on? There's certainly something about him and, if rumours are to be believed, he was being watched by other teams in the January transfer window. I get the feeling we've yet to see the best of Dielna, but the problem is I'm not sure where he fits in to our current team. For me, he's behind Lees, Loovens and Zayatte for a centre back slot, as he looks too erratic and unpredictable to instil confidence when playing there. It's no coincidence that Lees has looked shaky when paired with Dielna, but returned to his imperious best when played alongside Zayatte at the weekend. Similarly, he's behind Helan and perhaps Mattock in the race to start as left back. He looks much more assured in the left back position, and at least when he's played there he's able to bring the ball out from the back and put some decent crosses in from the left flank on occasion. Considering this and the fact that Helan is far more effective when running from deep, I wonder whether it might be worth trying Dielna on the left side of midfield? If played there, we could utilise his crossing, his penchant for 30-yard pile drivers and his defensive abilities to cover for Helan when he overlaps. He'd also offer an additional threat from set pieces and would add a physical presence to the team which has eroded slightly in recent years. He'd be an unorthodox left midfielder, but then our more orthodox wide men are hardly pulling up any trees this season, are they?

mike312
Said this on Saturday. I'd give him a try as he's one of the few who can cross the ball flat. He doesn't necessarily have to run past players, he can just keep banging crosses in.

Last_Great_Hope
If he was as good as some people thought he was, he wouldnt be behind fkin Mattock at LB and should be pushing Loovens for his place. But hes nowhere near either.

Guest wilyfox
They're both left-backs, but if I were to bump one forward it would be Helan rather than Dielna.

I just think Helan's pace gets us out of trouble at the back a few times a game, and he's better running with the ball from deep rather than picking it up further up the pitch. Gparrish
Stick at left back, move Helan forward. He's not a centre back, its pretty obvious.

How many of those times of trouble are caused by Helan himself by either losing the ball, or with poor positioning? For next season I wouldnt keep either Mattock or Dielna. Get a proper left back in, have Helan as a squad option only.

I agree about the Helan remarks because he's a left-back, but Dielna is even less of a winger than he is. It's a specialist position; either a player has the necessary craft and attacking instincts or they don't. Trying to convert someone against their own natural tendencies is a losing battle. I think Helan's been very good as an attacking left back this season and has been our most improved player. If he continued to develop at a similar rate, I wouldn't be considering letting him go any time soon. He does still need to work on his positioning, but that will come with consistent games in the same position.
Last_Great_Hope
Not really a left back for a team that is trying to build for promotion though.
Guest ka58
He's a really bad centre half. Half decent at left back but no better than mattock or Helan.

We seem to be moving away from traditional wingers towards wide midfielders, though. I may be hopelessly wishing for a Championship version of the Worthington / King combo, but I could see such a setup getting the best out of Helan in particular. Dielna has already shown he has a bit of pace and can cross the ball better than most of our midfielders. We wouldn't need him to go on mazy runs all the time, just whip the ball in from out wide or hold it up until he can play Helan in, then drop back to cover.
