Used to really hate it when it was announced he was going to ref our matches

He was like the Margaret Thatcher of the football world to me. The one you hated, and also the one you actually really loved to hate too

Pulled some right stunts when he referee'd our games

Anyone remember him ?

Remember him sending one of our players off in a home fa cup 3rd round tie with Derby in the mid 80's. Think it was chapman?

First few minutes as well, we went on to win that one. Seem to remember Derby's kit clashing with ours, so we wore light blue.

He was the ref at Villa in 1992 when we won 1-0 with a Jemson header that just went over the line. Courtney was his usual self, booking several Wednesday players for practically nowt, but Les Sealey went ballistic about the goal for a few minutes and then went crazy again at full time and had to be restrained from physically attacking the officials. Courtney did absolutely nothing...

The wintry weather played havoc with many ties. For example, Hull City's 2-1 win over Shrewsbury was played on Fourth round weekend, with Sheffield Wednesday only able to play their match against Derby more than two weeks after the scheduled fixture, a match they would win 1-0 despite having ten men, Lee Chapman's dismissal irking manager Howard Wilkinson so much that he had to be restrained from throttling referee George Courtney.

He had a mate who was a lecturer at the Poly (SHU) back then.  GC used to stay with him when reffing us.  He told me that Courtney loved winding Wednesday fans up and would send off one our players just for the reaction.  He hated us with a passion.
