how the hell did we lose to Charlton

Recommended Posts

It's fine margins.

Charlton miss an open goal today, against us they scored off somebody's elbow. (DIdn't Fulham also miss an open goal at the sty?)

Chris Maguire's last minute deflected shot sits up just right for the keeper to palm it away, today their deflected shot goes in.

Several reasons why we lost to Charlton;

1. Injuries to key first team players.

2. But even with those injuries, Gray put out a poor starting XI which led to;

3. A tactically poor performance (playing long ball to two strikers who were sitting on the shoulder of the last defenders, who themselves were not playing a high line, meaning that Wednesday kept giving away possession because there was little space to exploit and couldn't get the midfield to squeeze up the pitch)

4. Gray completely failed to respond to this glaring problem for 65 mins and when he did;

5. Switched to a baffling 4-1-5 formation

Any good team would have trashed Wednesday by about 3 goals on that day. But Charlton are not a good team. Despite everything that Wednesday did wrong in the match, perhaps point 6 is the most crucial;

6. Charlton relied on a fair amount of luck to win.

answering the OP  I think that that was one of the weirdest performances and wasted cup opportunities I can remember except for brighton way back when.

I was certain the blunts would win today, Charlton are genuinely rubbish, with anything like a performance we would have won

and the vision of that arrogant get swinging on the crossbar will make their relegation sweeter

And embarrassing as it was to lose to Charlton, it's nothing compared to losing to them lot at the sty. Had we have turned in a performance like Saturday's, we'd certainly have gone the same way as Charlton

Agree.

Think maybe Charlton did us a favour.

Goes against the grain, but Nigel Clough has got them buzzing and they're on the up, whereas we're pretty much flat-lining.

Think we could have struggled!!

Easy to explain really.......injuries.

If we had lee and semedo still fit we'd have beat charlton and the infected and now be us at Wembley.

This. Its hard not to feel as though the wheels have fallen off with the injuries to these two.

INJURED

It's not difficult to see why we messed up - a combination of injuries and terrible team selection by SG.
