Football Specials (Your Memories)

That Preston game Was my first away game. We went on coach and got attacked as soon as we arrived. We were in hiding around Preston until the train arrived. Most amazing sight seeing the Wednesday army arrive. We ran to join the hordes.

Was at the Pompey game too in their main stand because it was raining so hard. We won 1-0 megson scored from 30 yards (a wind assisted thunderbolt). We got attacked after game by some umbrella wielding Pompey fans

I love threads like this !!!!

one of my most vivid memories of travelling on the Inter City Owl train. Never into the violence, but wss buzzing after chasing them off the platform then getting bombared with tables from a kiosk they wrecked and threw from the bridge above the platform. Then it carried on in the train station. Still gives me goosebumps.

You didn't have to be (into the violence) in them days, it just happened.

Even minding our own business we were attacked at Leicester, in the Arsenal matches, brum, man.u, Liverpool, sarfend, gillingham,

Grimsby (as always) and they're the ones I can remember.

In them days you just accepted that it could turn pear shaped at anytime.

I went on a few in my early teens, dressed in my M&S 'casual' gear and with a carrier bag with a packed lunch my Mum had made for me! What a hooligan I was. No one touched the M&S! Oh no!

I remember going to Bolton in May 1982, it was the game after the Tony Towner dive at Millmoor. I think we could have still got promoted if we won at Bolton. Terry Curran scored early on to put us 1-0 up and all hell broke loose all around the ground. Mass brawling on three sides. I was clinging on to my sandwiches for dear life when a policeman, trying to arrest someone, knocked me over and I landed on my carrier bag flattening my egg and cucumber sandwiches. Nazis.

On the train back after the 3-1 defeat the mood was not the greatest and this wasn't helped when we were stationary for ages in some siding just outside Manchester. There were no announcements, we were just sat there for about an hour, so what did you do in those days when you were bored on a football special? Yep, dismantle the bugger! (Not me you understand), Seats were out of the windows, toilets wrecked, all quite disturbing especially on an empty stomach!

And every time we got back to Sheffield station, as mentioned before, there was the 'Sheffield Wednesdays back in town again!!' as a train load of Wednesday's finest spewed on to the platform.

Ah, those were the days.

I can remember when on Inter City Owl train to Blackpool and we'd stopped and a train full of Middlesbrough fans on way to Everton pulled up along side us.

Fire extinguishers, cans or anything you could get your hands on went hurling through open windows.

Happy days! lol

I also remember the chartered train we got to the cup final in 1991. Supposed to stop at Chesterfield to pick up the chairman and went straight through without stopping! Still got my ticket somewhere.

I think it was 1991 anyway... Too many cup finals back then!

Before Steve Woodhead started Inter City Owl trains in 79-80 season British rail put football specials on.

First one I ever went on was to Preston in early 70s, was some right nutters on it, I remember coppers getting on at Blackburn on way back looking for some Wednesday fans that had been causing trouble in Preston.

remember the ticket kiosk being pulled down at preston station after the game.....that took a bloody long time to get home as well!

Best one I recall was the one to Chelsea in the early '80s.

Battling with the Head Hunters on the Tube platform at Chelsea then again when we got off the Tube.

Chasing them through the streets to St Pancrass, then scattering them in the station with half of London's firms represented to see it

Not that I condone those things nowadays etc.

Manic day finished up with a broken nose and 4 stiches on top of my head both from bits of furniture being thrown. But obviously couldn't condone it today.

I remember the intercity owl to Portsmouth 83/84 I think stood on the uncovered away end and it pissed it down all day....think we won 2-1....when the game was over the coppers told us the train had broke down , so we had to wait..i think an hour passed (still weeing it down)...no train...a bit of moaning by the wednesdayites and they moved us to the home end which was covered...I think about half an hour later our train was ready  , when got to the station we found out we had no train heat....which ther trying to fix...another 30 mins passes and the train starts to move . , the train clears the platform and trains stop again...copper tells us a train has derailed at the next single ahead of us.....its now about half 8 on a Saturday night and we are about 100 yards out side Portsmouth station ....we get back to Sheffield at about 2am wet through and smelly ...I gets home to my house about 2.30am and I have to wake my folks up...I get a clip round mi lug hole and grounded for a week for being late home.. lol...I was 14...

That was the one I was going to mention!

I was on that one as well. I had a big 80s mohair jumper on that day that weighed about 4st when soaked.

Think we won the game though.

We  did indeed, we were pretty much unbeatable that season

I was on the Portsmouth train iam sure we won with Mick Lyons scoring

gary megson 35 yard free kick (took a deflection) about 75 mins.

I was on Portsmouth one too, luckily I went in seats which were only about 50p dearer.

I'm sure we won 1-0 with Megson scoring our goal.

Previous weekend we was away at Brighton and won 3-1 on a scorching hot afternoon.

The Brighton game was the weekend after and I took a full change of clothing on the coach just in case!

Yes, that's the one - I'd begun to think I'd imagined it but there you are. Thanks for that.

I remember going to Blackpool on the ICO, and we were diverted on to a spur to delay arrival at Blackpool station, We were sat there for ages when a train with 2 carriages pulled alongside us. It was Middleborough's version of the ICO, all of a sudden all hell broke loose, fire extinguishers, can's of beer, the lot went back and forth for what seemed like ages

Went to Grimsby on it and they stopped the train short of the platform, we could see the ground so everybody jumped off and waded through 5 foot high thistles, coppers didn't know what to do

Once pulling out of Sheffield station, there was a L**ds fan hanging out of an open window on another train, giving it the "L**ds, L**ds" chant, someone threw a can at him ,he never saw it coming and it hit him bang in the face, must have sparked him out.

You're right, Brighton was the weekend after the Portsmouth drenching. Our coach broke down just outside London on the way back. Another coach eventually picked us up and then dropped us off at a coach station in London. We waited again for another flippingcoach. 2 weeks in a row getting back to Sheffield around 3am.

I was on that one, then when we got to Blackpool station, instead of a police escort to the ground,

we were welcomed by the army, who walked us on the promenade guns and everything to the ground.

think they were only ta but it looked good.
