Owl1974
Just been looking at the Pressman or Kirkland thread and it got me thinking.... Sterland or Nilsson? Exciting local lad, Wednesday fan, goalscorer or cultured Swedish international defender? Who would you have if you could sign one of them in their prime again? Wolfmanjack
Do you mean enthusiastic, whole hearted local lad, or player who at the time was reputed to be the best right back in the world?
Owl1974
He was good but let's face it, if he had been the best right back in the world then he wouldn't have been playing for us.
oh_weds_we_love_you
I was only young, but I'm sure Sterland played on the wing for us more than he did at full back. But like I say, I was young so my memory might just be recalling the games he did play more advanced and not those where he played in defence. I put Nilsson and Sterland in my favourite Wednesday team - Rock on Rollie at right back and Zico at right midfield.
kobayashi
Sterland Mel was a one man team - tackles, crosses, penaltys, goals. Nilsson was a great defender but he didn't get forward like Mel...and in the end he cleared off leaving the club in the lurch, only to reappear at Coventry the day after his Wednesday contract expired. jayzman
He was good but let's face it, if he had been the best right back in the world then he wouldn't have been playing for us. Disagree. We had a decent team, and manager then, and could attract top-end players. Although Nilsson AND Sterland donw one side would have been awesome. Nilsson seriously was sheer class

Totally disagree, at the time we could ****** players off Arsenal and turn down British transfer fee record bids from Man Ure for our players. HOOTIE AND THE SHIT TU
Loved Sterland but Nilsson was the best full back on the planet at that time. Just a bloke, who used up all his luck in one go when he met his wife.
Ever the pessimist
Lee Dixon, Rob Jones of Liverpool who was unfortunate with injuries. He was the best right back in England by a long way. Jones may have ended up a top class right back but didn't due to injuries. Dixon was a reliable member of a no-frills back 4. Yes he will have won more than Nillson, but he was not a better player in my opinions.
