Andy Sinton

Recommended Posts

The reason the transfer came about was because he asked for a £1,000 a week pay rise at QPR but it was declined. Us and Arsenal put in the same offer and matched his wage demands, but he says that at the time he was refused permission to talk to Arsenal.

So basically, he signed for us to spite those in charge at QPR.

I understood it that he was told he couldn't speak us. George Graham gave him 4 days to go and speak to him but he left it too long so Arsenal pulled out.

To be fair it was one of the most honest interviews I've heard. He basically admitted that the price tag made him think he was something he wasn't and it affected his game.

Fair play to him

Sinton was unfortunate with us he was seen as a dangerman and the oppositiion used to kick him all over the pitch, which resulted him in getting injured. He was sidelined and then when fit was always getting match sharp, once he did na dlooked a threat the opposition would just kick him into submission.

With the price tag and beating Arsenal to his signature it was a sign of how far we had come, we held off Man Utd's overtures to Hirsty aswell. It could have all been so different, a period of success and we would have had more fans from South Yorkshire and who knows what might have happened.

Alas it was not to be and we ended up poor in more ways than one but hey we are still here.

Found this old article re. Sinton's transfer...

How feckin MAHOOSIVE were we back then?

http://www.independent.co.uk/sport/football-sinton-opts-for-northern-delights-1462318.html

"LIKE Arsenal earlier in the week, Liverpool yesterday discovered that they can no longer call the shots in the transfer market, as Sheffield Wednesday finally won the  Â£2.75m race to sign Andy Sinton in time to make his Hillsborough debut tomorrow - against Arsenal.

The Liverpool manager, Graeme Souness, made a last-minute attempt to take the England international to Anfield, but failed to win backing for the bid from his directors.

Trevor Francis, who has again broken Wednesday's transfer record, had set a 2pm deadline for Sinton to agree a four-year contract. On Tuesday, Arsenal, the first to agree the fee with Queen's Park Rangers, had withdrawn their interest, claiming they had waited long enough for Sinton's decision. 'Andy is an excellent player and a welcome addition to our squad,' Francis said."

I think the idea of signing Sinton was to supply the crosses to Hirst from the left flank. It was said at the time that Andy Sinton had the best percentage of successful crosses than any other player in England at the time. Was he worth the fee...No. He was injury prone too.Turned out to be very disappointing.

There weren't many complaints when we signed him.

He seemed like the final piece of the jigsaw. Waddle on one side, him an England International BTW on the other.

Just never worked out.

I agree - weren't the Arse and others in for him and us signing him seen as a major coup?  Happy times when we had an awesome squad and went to games expecting to see a win or at least a good performance. Be interesting to see how much such a squad would be worth in these days of over-inflated player prices.

Our demise rests solely on the person(s) who decided to discard Pearson and Palmer at the same time.

Interesting as well that Sinton mentioned there were problems with certain players and Francis, he just did not know how to manage them!

Francis broke him. Sinton started as a classic winger geting crosses in from the byline, after a few months he started cutting in, just like Francis used to, which made him a dogger player. Reckon that was Francis influence.
