@owlstalk
Thousands of students descended on Hillsborough Stadium on Wednesday as SWFC played host to the city’s famous Varsity Challenge. The annual sporting tournament between the University of Sheffield and Sheffield Hallam University, now in its seventeenth year, concluded with the men’s football finals and a 1-0 Hallam victory. A crowd of 3,500 turned out to support the rival institutions and see the University of Sheffield take home the coveted trophy for the first time in a decade having won the overall competition on aggregate. The club’s CSR Development Manager, Spencer Taylor was delighted that the club was able to host this prestigious event for the fourth year running. He said: “We’re extremely pleased to have been selected to host this year’s Varsity final which proved a huge success with thousands of students creating a wonderful atmosphere. “The event enhances the links between Sheffield Wednesday and both Universities and follows on from the announcement of the club’s ground breaking partnership with Sheffield Hallam University back in March.†The Varsity event is a celebration of sport in Sheffield, showcasing the cities facilities and capabilities for high profile sporting events. It also aims to involve the local community, and each year it nominates a chosen charity to support throughout the competition. This year, partners of the SWFC Community Programme, Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice, were selected as the official charity of Sheffield Varsity. Lee A
Thought the guy in top left had Madine on his shirt at first. For once Neil I agree with you though, if there's one thing we need more of at Hillsborough it is definitely bouncing, tipsy 18 year old blonde girls. stewtheowl
Went to the Varsity final last year and I tell you what, it's a cracking atmosphere. The South Stand was split in half and it was just like being at an away game with the rival fans being separated by a bit of netting. The banter, chants and songs were brilliant to. Some of them were original and some were just blatantly nicked from other terraces. The Pozan that the Hallam fans are shown doing is a right ball ache though as you have to turn your back on the game.
Guest Rich Stevenson
Looks like Galatasaray or something minus the flares. Believe it was like Galatasaray minus the flares, we did however have the odd frying pan thrown at us in the technical area plus a Y-fronted streaker who made quite an impression :) http://youtube.googleapis.com/v/riIn0BiU3fI I can't speak for the Hallam lot but Uni's night was unreal. I can vouch for how awesome the Uni night was... bring on next year
