dunsbyowl
Played this day 5th April 1986. After beating West Brom, Orient, Derby and West Ham we met Everton at Villa Park losing 1-2 in extra time in front of 47,711. Any memories of the cup run or the semi final? 31Dec1966
For the only time in my life I was hoping Wednesday would not score. We were packed in so tightly I genuinely could not move and feared for my safety. I had a Mars bar in my pocket which I couldnt get out, it had turned to mush after the game. When Shutty scored I STILL couldnt move my arms from my side. I was desperate to see us get to the Cup Final but it was a scary experience. Ever the pessimist
I was only 6 so was not there, but surprised myself by how bitterly upset I was after losing. Think it is still only time Wednesday have brought me to tears. In a weird way it was kind of confirmation that Wednesday would be such a big part of my life from then on. matt68owls
if you see any pictures from the semi final you can see the wednesday end absolutely packed solid with no room whatsoever, the everton end was full but nowhere near as much. all i can remember about that cup run was carl shutt, he just went on a scoring spree that i had never really seen before since watching wednesday from the mid 70s, you just expected him to score every game. it was a different experience to the 1983 semi final, i expected us to beat brighton but never expected us to beat everton, at the time they were arguably the best team in england, they were current league champions and had won the cup winners cup cup winners if i remember rightly. with players like southall, bailey, steven, stevens, heath, sharp, sheedy, ratcliffe, reid, harper, mountfield, etc they were a really hard team to beat and i was quite suprised when we took them to extra time. it was one of those things, you could just see the goal coming, not that everton were the better team but when the cross came over you could see the defender wasn't going to reach the header and sharp was waiting to volley home the winner. the first goal IIRC was a 50/50 between harper and hodge and the everton player just got there first and lobbed it over the keeper. clud17
Remember being gutted. I had just started watching Wednesday despite being a fan from an early age. Carl Shutt was my hero at the time as he scored a hatrick against Birmingham and a young David Seaman in my first ever game. Everton was definitely a bogey team at the time, i don't remember getting much from them . I seem to remember playing them in the early rounds of the cup sometimr in the 80's and having a ridiculous amount of replays. It was 5-0 at half time, which was crazy really as there'd been nothing to choose between the sides in the first Three games.

fredmciverslovechild
Went up from Chelmsford to Birmingham for that weekend with my girlfriend...now my wife! Stayed at the Holiday Inn which is somewhere in the City centre. Came down to reception on Saturday morning (we'd got there very late on Friday night cos of an office do) and found myself standing next to Graeme Sharp. We'd managed to chose the same hotel that the Everton players were staying in. Had a quick word with him just to show my allegiance; actually, he was quite talkative given the circumstances. The rest of the team was in the dining room at breakfast though they'd cordoned that bit off. I just felt straight away that they seemed so relaxed, as though it was just another game and they would treat it as such. Felt that familiar sinking feeling of impending doom! The only thing about the match I can really remember is that standing in the corner of the terrace some guy just in front of us suddenly dropped his trousers and did the most disgusting crap on the terrace. It sort of summed up the day. Had to walk back to the hotel from Villa Park; didn't really feel disappointed as I'd been so sure we would lose. We had this thing about Everton at the time; they were a real bogey team for us.
Rogers
Best Everton side - 1983 - 1986. Sharp, Gray, Lineker, Sheedy, Steven,Stevens, Reid, Watson,Ratcliffe,Southall. All great in their day.
matthefish2002
I was too young to go but remember being at home and jumping around the living room when Shutt scored. Was listening to it on the radio as very few games even big games were live on TV. I remember being a bit glad we lost as I would not have been able to go to the final but most of my friends said they were going to go and I was really jealous. I feel a bit guily remembering that now.
Guest mkowl
We went into the game with a few injuries to key players. Always thought their first goal was offside Was a tight game without a load of chances at either end - but when Sharp scored I don't really remember us having any fight left. It was heaving on the Holte End, that was a massive terrace but compared to the Kop was quite a shallow angle so the view wasn't great. As was the way they didn't half cram you in, it certainly wasn't just at Hillsborough where it happened at Semi Finals.
RolandWaddle
Everton were a great side at the time. We had some good battles with em but could never seem to beat them. I was in the Holte End at the side next to the main stand. The disallowed Thompson goal was a fantastic strike if I remember right, the fact it was disallowed summed up his spell with us. Chapman was ill as well. Still got the programme somewhere. A bloody quid - robbing buggers
alanharper
I associate that cup run with the death of my Nanan, she was taken ill on the Monday that we played WBA in the third round, and passed away on the Friday, the day after we won the Thursday night replay 3-2 at WBA and the day before we beat Oxford in the league on the Saturday. The semi final was played on what would have been her birthday (happy birthday for today, Nanan). As for the semi, I was 13 and unlike the 1983 semi I went into it not really expecting to win so I didn't take it as badly. Everton were the league champions and a major bogey side for us, even back then we hadn't beaten them for over 20 years, they'd already battered us twice that season including 5-1 at Hillsborough and we wouldn't start beating them regularly until the 90s. They had Lineker and Southall out injured which was a bonus, but we also had our main creator Marwood out and Chapman played despite not being fit. We gave a decent account of ourselves in the game itself, we were by far the better team in the first half without creating many real chances, but their class told as the game went on. There was a foul in the build up to the opening goal which went unpunished, and everybody went ballistic at Shutt's equaliser. Everton always looked the most likely to get the winner, I remember Sharp dribbling through half of our team and Hodge saving, but after they scored again we were finished. Thompson and Shirtliff forced decent but comfortable saves from Mimms, but we never really looked like equalising. Was gutted to see my second FA Cup semi final defeat, but at least it turned out to be third time lucky...
Guest on the band wagon
Check out youtube the Holt end is packed. I was in the crowd but can 't remember being particuarly worried by it. We did well for much of the game but once they got the second we did n't threaten too much 2 semi finals in 3 years, them were the days
NYCOWL
This might sound daft, but in my memory, the crowd noise dipped as the ball fell to Sharp, the THUMP he made when he hit the winner, I can still hear it.

Luckily the wedding reception was across from a TV shop and I kept sneaking out to have a look at teletext. A sickening day.
Guest crookesmona
Initially didnt think I would get a ticket so a mate who I was working with was a Villa fan took me two weeks earlier to the Villa / Birmingham Game and we went to the ticket office to see if the home club had any tickets and they siad thye had sent all their allocation to Everton. Anyway managed to get a ticket through other means and went in a minibus with 15 others and remember playing a MASSIVE game of footie in a chuch yard near the ground with other Wednesday fans and local kids . I ended up losing the ball it as I did a HAVE IT and it got stuck on the top of the church. Dont remember much about the actual game apart from as others have said being packed on our side of the Holt end and only 8 of us coming back as the other 8 got arrested of which one got arrested for head butting a police horse.
