How Fragile Are Footballers ?

Recommended Posts

Have been reading this morning how because footballers are paid a shedload of money and are professional footballers, that they shouldn't be fragile, shouldn't suffer from lack of confidence, shouldn't have an ego, and shouldn't be fragile.

I'd like to know everyone's opinions on this and whether this is the case or not for the Owlstalk readers.

Knowing a few professional footballers I'd say that they have seriously fragile personalities (like it or not) and sometimes the smallest things can upset them or get them down

They get a lot of positive reinforcement from their management teams and football clubs and even more from fans face to face, or on social networking but that can add to the problem of them being wrapped up in cotton wool a bit...

You only have to read Twitter and see the replies to any ex player wishing Sheffield Wednesday luck in their latest game to see 'would be better with you in the side.. can I get a RT for that ?' type nonsense..

Players in my opinion have fragile personalities a lot of the time - regardless of the money they're paid

What do you reckon ?

S6 is no place for fragile footballers... think Megson was right in his recruitment strategy

Players that Megson recruited are no different - fragile personalities

id happily have their wages and take dogs abuse for 90 minutes every game.

It's not about that though is it

Even at Sheffield Wednesday level they are paid a lot more money then the average man in the street.

If they can't handle it they should go and do another job.

It's at every club....

I wonder how most of us would fair in our workplaces if we were constantly under scrutiny not only from our employers but the general public and every little perceived mistake might result in us being booed by our 'fans' . How would we perform under such pressure?

The bottom line is if they can handle it their careers will be more successful than if they can't. that to a certain extend is why they are well paid. Don't pretend it doesn't exist or that it is easy.

Some players are fragile - not all.  Look at the Manchester United players and squads under Ferguson.  Not one of Ferguson's regular players are 'shrinking violets' - if anyone of his players shows anything other than a iron will, they're out on their arse.  The vast majority of Ferguson's players over the years have been technically ordinary but their strong will has lifted them above an ordinary player.

We need to recruit 'iron will' players.

Nurses, Teachers, Policemen to name a few public sector workers who are constantly audited and assessed, have to meet professional standards and are always in the public eye. If any one of them fooks up then the media make sure there is a public lynching and the profession gets dragged through the gutter. To add to that it's my opinin that the majority of them don't get remunerated anywhere near enough for the effort they put in.
