Grant Holt

Recommended Posts

I'd have like to have seen owlstalk when Holt was playing for the club, to see what sort of abuse he'd get on here. For me, I can see Madine taking a similar path to Holt.  Even though we got him from Barrow as opposed to a league 1 club (Although Holt was born in Carlisle!), someone saw the potential and snapped him up.

He then spent a few years back around the lower leagues, before he turns good in his late 20's. I reckon this could happen to Madine. Keep him at Championship level for a few years and I reckon he'll be prolific. Let him go and we'll all be kicking ourselves when he gains promotion to the Premiership with some rank middle of the road club like Ipswich or Derby after scoring 30 goals for them.

(I know it's another thread involving Madine, sorry)

I like Madine and he has a lot more natural ability than Holt but it has to be said he has nowhere near the same level of desire.

After watching Holt at Hillsborough (where he was just basically a dirty tw@t) I cant believe the career he has gone on to have.

Fair play to the bloke.

For those of us with longer memories,  in 1966 we got rid of 22 year old striker John Hickton who despite 21 goals from 56 appearances (stat per Wiki) was the target of much abuse at Hillsbro and like Holt was thought to be somewhat of a useless lump.

He went to Middlesbrough and scored 192 goals in 10 years (again stat per Wiki).

Holt wasn't anything like the player he is now when he played for us. He used to try far too hard, had no positional sense and no composure in front of goal.

He's basically learned his craft in the lower leagues since leaving us ( a step too far at the time) and he's shown just what can be achieved with hard work and coaching

Madine is a complete arse hole. Not unlike Bothroyd, Ranger etc...same stupid mentality. Instead of appreciating their good fortune, they continue to post poo on twitter and live in a cocoon..protected from the doom and gloom that the rest of us face, believing people actually give a rumblein throw about their self importance. Football Vvankers!

It was actually Holt I had in mind when I posted about fans being too quick to write players off in the Madine thread.

Course he was.

Haha. You have to look at things like this with logic though! Madine isn't good enough yet. We can't have a player who is not good enough playing for us for 5 years hoping he will suddenly get better.

Or, not play him for 5 years, he gets no football and will not get better!!

The one difference between Holt and Madine was that every single time Grant Holt pulled the shirt on, as he did for every other club he's played for, he ran his blood to water, and never stopped working from the first minute to the last. Unfortunately, even though madine has very little pace, he still doesn't put the work in. If football shorts had pockets in them, he'd stroll around with his hands in them. I'm sure there's a reasonable third division player somewhere in there, but he looks a million miles off the second division.

I used to argue the throw about Holt before he left us as fans used to give him a lot of unnecessary abuse.. He had great technical ability and just needed to speed up a bit but his work rate was first class unlike Madine who does'nt put himself about enough for me.  I was totally pi$$ed off when Turner let him go without working on his weak points and unable to see his potential..

I think though, if we'd signed him this season he'd be one of those who's being given time to learn the game, and mature, but at the time Turner signed him we were in such a state that every player we signed had to come into the team and make an immediate impact.

Yet another of the players signed by Turner for us, who went on to be very good players. We should have employed CT as a scout rather than as Manager, because he certainly knew a player when he saw one.

I think Madine does get unfair stick and does put a shift in, I think in the Charlton home game he proved he has more in the tank to give though.

I think that although this season has been a bit of a write off for him I think it's worth seeing whether he can step up next season.
