Bruce Grobbelaar

Recommended Posts

Does anyone else remember Bruce Grobbelaar playing for Sheffield Wednesday ?

I remember him playing for us in a reserves game at Hillsborough and letting in the easiest of shots from distance in front of the West Stand

He was truly awful when playing for us

Anyone else see him play for Wednesday ?

I had a week trial as a GK at Wednesday when I was 16 when Grobbelaar was there. He only turned up one of the days and hardly did anything then. Pressman was quality though... was a beast training and really funny bloke!

wasn't that just after he got cleared of the match fixing thing with No-Hans Segers?

seem to remember Have I Got News For You making a joke about Bruce letting them know the result of Wednesday's game the following week...

Cant remember him playing in a game apart from what I thought was a pre season game.

and if memory serves me correct he was only with us a few months at best on the bench it was well at the end of his prime

When he played for us it was like there was a 'Barry Horne invisible forcefield' around the centre circle which wouldn't let him escape.

Although he did attempt to escape it by running like a crab in an attempt to fool the forcefield.

My overriding memory is the Imre Varadi goal at Anfield when Varadi chased a long ball way out on our right touchline and who should appear but Grobbelaar, who missed his tackle leaving Varadi to hit the empty net from way out there. Incidentally, Sterland then got a late one for a great 2-0 win.

It was Shelton who got the second after a Sterland shot had been palmed out to him after a Grobbelaar mistake.
