Penalties

Recommended Posts

^ a MASSIVE chunk of penalties given are not deliberate handball

alan shearer said this on MOTD yesterday and its definately true

Very true. Having been a referee, I know how difficult it is to make an instant decision. Some are obvious but many are borderline and if that is the case, I wouldn't give it, it had to be 100% in my mind at the time.

It's lack of consistency that's irritating.

As mentioned before in the first half Helan had the ball smacked at him from a yard out, turned his body and covered his face with his arm. Oliver straight away free kick. The one at the end was in the air for a good 2/3 seconds before it got to the forest right back and still he didn't get his arm out the way. How can it be a different rule inside and outside the box?

(Not an excuse though, forest were the much better team and deserved to win)

In 2009-2010 we were awarded 2 penalties in 46 games -fewer than anyone else in the Championship:

In 2010-2011 we were awarded 7 penalties in 46 games, joint 7th in Division 1:

http://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/en/league-one/elfmeter/wettbewerb_GB3_2010_a.html

In 2011-2012 we were awarded 2 penalites in 46 games, joint 21st in Division 1 despite being promoted:

This season we have been awarded 2 penalties in 34 games, the joint fewest in the Championship:

So overall in the last 3 and 2/3 seasons we've been awarded just 13 penalties in 172 games.

It just needs to be consistent, we've had penalties given for unintentional handballs previously. Then you would think that when they do happen there may be a 50/50 chance whether the ref gives it.

This happened 3 times yesterday, surely the ref has to think enough is enough at the third handball whether it was intentional or not. Particularly the third one which may not have been intentional but was clumsy and gave them an advantage . (Commentator said he didn't mean it because he was looking at the man behind him, that's not our problem).

I think a draw would've been a smash an grab from us and not really deserved based on our poor team set up in the first half, but its galling that we weren't awarded a penalty and these things add up.

Incredible that Palace have been awarded the most and have conceded the least too. 11 in their favour with only 3 conceded.

We've had some rotten luck this season from officials.

If someone has a shot and it hits a defender on the hand on the line, its a penalty whether its intentional or not, and more than likely a red too.

Same if someone unintentionally brings someone down when through on goal.

You can't be surprised we don't get many penalties. We are set up to hit teams on the break and spend very little time in the opponents third unless were losing and its in the last few minutes

Have you read the link that Bob posted above?

What you've described above isn't technically correct, however, a lot if refs aren't interpreting the rules as such, and many fouls are given without it being deliberate.

The link above also describes the yellows and reds too.

Very lucky, how many extra points could those pen stats be worth over the season.

Spot on Nev. We didn't deserve any points which is a shame because we've played well for a number of weeks. Beaten by a better side today simple as. There have been a number of games where decisions haven't gone our way though and these stats do back them up.

We were beaten by the better side. However, the defender failed to control the ball properly and as a result of his own error handled the ball which in turn helped him to make the clearance. Regardless of whether Forest deserved to win we should have had a penalty and the chance to pick up a point.

Watford outplayed Wolves on Friday but a moment of sloppy defending cost them 2 points, we should have had the chance to deny Forest due to their error at the back.

The link just shows how ambiguous the rule is, even from 8 years ago. It's ridiculous the rules haven't been clarified since that time.

The point remains that the same referee last night blew for an unintentional handball outside of the area, then turned down multiple appeals just because it was inside the area.

If a player handles a shot on the line, unintentionally. If the ref sees it, hes giving the penalty.

Exactly, that's football.

Unfortunately so is the fact the referee doesn't get everything right.

We have had some bad luck, but fortune has been on our side a number of times aswell, don't forget that.

Helan should have been sent off against Huddersfield.

Llera offside goal against Hull.

Madine foul on goalkeeper for O'Grady to get winner against Barnsley.

Reda Johnson blatant foul at home against Charlton in the penalty box- not given.

Sure we've had alot of bad luck, but over the season so far I think it's been balanced out.

The Helan one - fair enough.

The Llera being offside - he didn't touch the ball and many goals will be allowed with other players in offside positions in front of the keeper, very few goals get disallowed for this. Steve Bruce didn't make a big thing of it and conceded we fully deserved to win the game, we also had a perfectly good goal chalked off in that game. Just because grunting Beagrie made a point of it doesn't make it right, exactly the opposite as far as we are concerned with him usually.

Madine - may have been a foul, however the ref has admitted that at that point Barnsley should have already been down to 10 men.

Reda - may have been a foul but if you are going to call that then Antonio should have had half a dozen penalties in the first few weeks of the season.

Helan should have been sent off against Huddersfield.

Technically yes. But don't forget that his first booking was mistaken identity, Antonio should have had the yellow card.
