DJ says our players have developed and grown?

Coke Llera Lee  look better now having been given time to develop and grow, has Buxton too?

Antonio?

Is that about it?

All the rest are new signings loans etc. or already have Championship experience e.g. Kirkland JJ Reda Prutton Gardner, has Helan?

Has Madine improved?

So maybe you could say 4 or 5 have developed... Not sure who else he means, BUT 4 or 5 is enough to make a real difference aren't they?

Antonio is not a better player than earlier in the season imo. Lee HAS. Tbh I think DJ had written off coke and prutton. Buxton has experience and is always relaible. Madine if anything has got worse.

In response to other posters im not looking to criticse just have an informed debate. Im delighted with the turn in results but surely every topic doesnt need to be about kissing DJ and the players' arses

It's probably collectively that we've improved. It seems that we've realised now what is needed for survival and have taken on a more pragmatic approach. It's very much about, when in doubt kick it out and the team keeping its shape. Recently we've tried to alter it a bit by pairing Wickham with Lita but even yesterday I noticed both strikers were told to fall back and defend the wide areas.

Perhaps we need to stop thinking about individuals.

Football is a team/squad game, we have brought in some experienced players for this level.

Maybe now with the bit more experience in the team the tactics or certain things DJ wanted them to do are working.

Kirkland, Buxton, Pugh, Gardner, Llera,  Prutton, Lita have all played loads of games at this level or higher.

Lee, Antonio and Wickham probably lack games at this level but all 3 are young men with their careers ahead of them.

Out of the starting 11 yesterday that leaves Giles Coke who did play in the SPL with Motherwell.

Then even in reserve we have Bywater, Taylor, Mattock, JJ and Semedo.

A much more experienced squad of players at this level than when we started the season.

Look at Charlton and Huddersfield, they both had good starts to the season, but now they're both on the verge of freefalling way down the table, at quite some pace.

We dug deep, battle through the rough patch and so far we're prevailing, it's all about endurance.

Do you honestly expect DJ to pronounce that most of his summer signing were gash? and that he's overcome his mistakes with more signing and old players returning to form?

No of course not, he's waffleing, as most managers do. The important thing is, its looking like we're out of the poo !

DJ is used to managing at the top of this division, with players of better technical ability.

Some of the players he brought in were useless, others were just not what we needed. Could you imagine Rodri, Bothroyd or Pecnic thriving in a slog like the Palace game?

He made a decision to make us more solid and to go from there, it clearly goes against his usual principles but we needed results.

The one time we tried to play from the back on Saturday Buxton got caught and we conceeded a corner. It's no surprise Llera et al are getting the ball up field as quick as they can.

DJ knows what he is doing, he is never going to say 'My signings were rubbish', even though he alluded to his signings being 'trial and error' in his interview on Saturday.

Its always been a work in progress...admittedly the mix an' match stuff had us all sh*tting ourselves but do you think Jones has hit on the right formula through simple luck?...

Course not, its taken a lot of hard work,

All I wanted was one place above the relegation spot after last year..We have to build slowly...we have not got millions of pounds to waste...Mandaric always said that..and slowly we are getting there...take a breath lads...

Saying our upturn in form is thanks to new players coming in is as easy as blaming it all on rodri... I mean, look at when he came and what happened when he left... bla bla bla

In reality, it's not that simple. There is a multitude of different things which just seem to have clicked.

  • couple of our young CM's (who were never intended to play so many games) have a disaster against watford forcing management to reconsider other options
  • we get a new coach come in to bolster the backroom staff
  • prutton and coke come in, loans finished and injuries sorted, fresh eyes on training ground obviously help to some extent too
  • Luck started going our way (think vs barnsley)
  • confidence starts building after some scrappy results
  • players start settling into the side and seem to finally be used to each other
  • some players come back from injury
  • we start thinking about playing players out of position to fill some gaps (helan and lee pushed moved into midfield, antonio moved up front)
  • we begin to offload some dead wood in the team, which can only boost individual players time with trainers/managers
  • some unsuccessful loans come to an end
  • offloaded wages can now be put to good use in the loan market
  • as we're playing better football, better footballers consider coming on loan to us

It always felt to me that the team needed a bit of luck and confidence more than anything, I feel the rest is all knock on effects of that more than anything.

Good post. For some reason though, people like to praise/blame something simple and obvious.
