Guest SWFC10
A very poor game with 0-0 written all over it until Lita managed to out jump Delaney and head in off bar. It was their first chance of game. We barely had one other than a Dobbie through ball to Bolasie who didn't make enough contact and Kirkland saved at full length. After the goal we huffed and puffed but didn't create a chance. Defence was solid apart from goal. Midfield was OK but guilty of giving ball away too much especially Dobbie. Murray got barely any service. Disappointingly we looked quite average without Wilf. ....................... A deeply frustrating afternoon. We were mugged. After a scrappy first 45 minutes, we totally dominated the second half. On 79 minutes Sheffield Wednesday then with their first attack of the half took advantage of a sleepy Palace defence and scored a really soft goal, and that was that as they then clung on until the end. For what it is worth, we didn't deserve to lose. It was an OK, but not great, performance with no shortage of effort and commitment. A point would have flattered Sheffield Wednesday. But none of that really matters. Once again we have chucked away points away from home against very ordinary opposition and it is crushingly disappointing. We never really got going in the first half. We set up with Jedi playing very deep, virtually a back five, and with Williams also dropping deep. This meant that, unlike in recent away matches, we could play the ball from the back to the midfield. But it also meant we lacked numbers and threat in the final third. After a fairly lively start from Palace, Sheffield Wednesday had a good spell. A cross from the right found their striker unmarked about 7 yards out, but he tried to control it with his chest and made a hash of it. They then had a spell where they put in three dangerous crosses, Palace failing to clear convincingly. They got crosses in too easily. On 21 minutes a free header where their striker should have done better. On 31 minutes they attacked down the left with ease, a deep cross was bet at the far post, but Parr blocked it with Speroni probably beaten. We looked lively when we got forward. A couple of times Dobbie got in good positions down the left (one of them from a great Bolasie cross-field ball) but put in poor crosses. A lively interchange between Williams and Bolasie almost resulted in Murray being put through on 35 mins. Dobbie then had two shots blocked. But any Palace pressure was not sustained. We gave the ball away a few times, and the ref ignored a couple of blatant fouls on Jedi. We didn't create any clear chances. We looked like we were missing Zaha. We stormed out of the blocks right from the start of the second half. Bolasie and KG drove forward forcefully and skillfully. There were three successive Palace corners. Parr was lively down the right with some good runs but poor crosses. KG was playing like a man possessed. Our best chance came on 72 minutes when Bolasie made a great diagonal run off the ball, and was found with a good through ball. He was about 15 yards out. Not an easy chance, and he tried to surprise the on rushing keeper by wrong footing him with an early dinked shot. The keeper got down and saved it. At that stage we were absolutely dominating. Holloway then bizarrely substituted Williams for Phillips, a very poor decision in my opinion, which led to us losing our shape and flow. On 79 minutes a cross was cleared, but not very well, and the Palace defence did not get out quick enough. Their player had it on the right. Parr went to him but was isolated, and hesitated to close the guy down because of an overlapping run. The cross came in and found Litta unmarked who scored of the underside of the bar. A terrible goal for us to concede. For the remainder of the match we pushed forward, exerting lots of pressure but not creating any good chances. Sheffield Wednesday quite solid in defence. On a personal note, my last 5 Palace games have been the away fixtures at Leeds, Hull, Burnley, Huddersfield, and today ( I live in Yorkshire). That is 450 minutes of football with only one Palace goal (and that was a meaningless goal against Leeds), and only one Palace point (at Hull). Ratings: Speroni 6 – only thing he really had to do was pick the ball out of the net Parr 6 – lively going forward, but poor crosses, and a bit shakey defensively. Should have closed their player down before the cross for the goal. Richards – 6 solid and unspectacular. They got behind him a couple of times early on for crosses, but generally OK. Not much going forward. Delaney – 6 solid on the ball, but too many free headers for them in first half, and went to sleep for goal. Ramage – 6 ditto Jedi 7 – excellent, solid, combative, intelligent. But was very deep for much of the game. KG 8 – superb in the second half as he drove forward. Not enough ambition in first 45 minutes. Jonniesta 7 – another good performance. We look so much more balanced with him playing. But some poor decision making when driving forward. I would have liked to see him run at them and commit their defence more. Shouldn’t have been subbed. Bolasie 7 – good second half. Not enough from him first half, and lacked cutting edge. Perhaps could have done better with what was our best chance., but it was not easy. In fact it was our only real chance (!) Dobbie 7 – lively and good movement, but some crosses poor. Murray 6 – no services or chances. Subs Philips 8 – excellent link-up play. Perhaps should have come on earlier. Wilbraham and Butterfield not on for long enough to rate. The ref 3 – he was a certain Paul Bates, which prompted jokes about (Master) Bates, which were quite apt really, as he was an absolute w**ker. Overweight. Failed to keep up with the game, and when he did got in the way. Some really poor decisions. None of them decisive, but some of them halted us when we had momentum. He failed to deal with blatant Sheffield Wednesday time wasting in additional time, and then blew the full time whistle as we were on the attack and about to cross the ball into the box. Palace fans 10 – good numbers and lots of noise on a bitterly cold day. Sheffield Wednesday fans and stewards quite friendly. Hillsborough is an impressive, traditional football ground, with four cavernous stands. ............ Oh dear, oh dear. Not a particularly good game and a very disappointing result. Lots of possession but passing was generally average and not a lot of end product so we didn't really test Kirkland. Having said that we were the better team other than for a ten minute spell in the second half. I know Kirkland ia a tall bugger but I couldn't quite figure why Yannick was on him at corners rather than Rambo as that's worked well recently. Talking to the Weds fans on the way back to the station they were expecting to get beaten which makes it doubly disappointing. MOM was Williams although he could have released Murray a couple of times. Was going to be Jedi who broke things up magnificently but his passing was off today. Bad day at the office. Wheb was the last time we won away? Peterborough in early November wasn't it?

OxonOwl
It is funny how people see games differently. Not surprising that many see through glasses tinted with their team's colours. What is most surprising is how fan's of the same club often see games in a different light. I wasn't there. It sounded like a dour battle and that nil - nil would have probably been fair. We have had so many games where we have not got what we deserved so it may be balancing out now.
Guest UpTheOwlsss
HAHAHA they brought 1300 and had 50 fans at the back singing ,sure we brought double that to palace earlier in the season! Eccy Owl
Probably fair comments, I thought they were the better team for most of the match, but thought we defended well. All in all a poor match, a smash and grab from us!

Mixed feelings about this one really, I dont think lita was offside earlier when the linesman flagged him that would have been a clear chance. Apart from that it was scrapping passing in the middle of the field with few and far chances. LoadABallacks
They were the better side without threatening. We were poor but ironically Lita could/should have been taking the match ball home with him.

Guest JonTheOwl66
They are looking for excuses as why to hate us- born and bread to dislike everyone from the South. They hate the fact that we could probably buy their homes outright. They hate the fact they have a stupid accent. They hate the fact that we closed all their mines. They just hate.... That made me chuckle a lot.
