SnowyOwl13
Just been watching the Paolo di Canio pushing Paul Alcock video, and it looks as if the North is empty! Why did we have seemingly poor crowds then?
Prendo's boots
We were all on the Lower Lepp and spread around!!! There were still 29k at that game im sure!!!
horny owl
Crowds across the country were a lot lower back then for some reason.

thailand owl
I think we will always be a club that avergaes in the 20 thousands I am 44 and we have never averaged 30k in my lifetime. Although the numbers can be there for the big games we just cant sustain them all season long.

IMHO i think if we where challenging for promotion to the prem i think we could average atleast 28k if not 30 and if we ever did get back into the prem i think we will easily average over 30k, the blunts managed to do it so why couldn't we? Ever the pessimist
The decline / rot had set in so we were still getting the crowds we were before the premier league and euro 1996 had boosted everyone else's. If we got back in prem we would easily average over 30k now with a feel good factor, floating 'supporters' (blades had lots of these boost their attendance in their glory season)
torryowl
that season(98-99) we were the 14th best supported club in the country with a average of 26,745 which just about reflects the position the club finished in the prem so the figures arnt to bad ......as a matter of interest that average last season would have put us 13th
Guest Johnbloodaxe
When pigs go bust next season and close altogether we will have the whole city to go at, the extra 20 % of he city would give us our 30K plus crowds if added to our current 80% of the city... pro rata. PeteG_1984
We do seem to average around early 20's no matter how good we are. However, I do think if we were promoted back to the prem, the first few seasons ( assuming we stayed up) would see averages of above 30k
Lee A
Some people really underestimate how good our average attendance is these days, football is unbelievably expensive and a team surrounded by other reasonable sized clubs can still average well over 20k despite being absolute sh!t for 15 years. We will never average over 30k imo, certainly not as easily as some seem to think, we will always attract it for big games or perhaps with a decent ticket offer, but to average it for a whole season is just not going to happen. Maybe if we went back up to the prem we could get it for one season, but it would soon settle back into the mid 20s.
Guest BirdonaMaguire
Especially back in the days when you had the option to stand on the kop. Sitting down at football matches is dire. The Kop had been seated for 5/6 years by then.

So there was only 6 teams with a lower average than us. Hard to imagine especially when you consider who was in the PL in that year, Derby, Boro, Leicester, Coventry, Wimbledon, Southampton, Charlton and Blackburn. Boro and Derby still had new ground syndrome. We were actually 12th in the attendances in the PL, the two others above us were City and Sunderland (1st season at SOL). Fair enough, not really the sort of thing I'm willing to argue about as nobody can really back it up, but personally I really doubt we would

You are right we were 12th not 14th but neither Sunderland or City, if you mean Man City were in the Prem in 98/99.
oh_weds_we_love_you
The Premiership attendances as a whole were a lot lower in the 90's than the 00's and now 10's. Unfortunately, we dropped out of the Premiership at the wrong time and United won promotion at the right time, hence we've averaged over 30k in recent times and we haven't. But Unitedites are too thick to understand this and use it as a tool to 'bash' Wednesday with.
