beloved_aunt
Why were we totally unable to cross a ball last night? Time and time again we got the ball out wide level with the edge of the penalty area but didn't put the ball in their for Madine, and later COGba to attack. One incident particularly sticks in the mind, the ball was rolled back Mayor on the right hand side touchline, almost exactly level with the D and he had plenty of space. He took two touches, cut inside and lost the ball. If a supposed Championship winger doesn't have the confidence or ability to pop that into the box first time then we really are in trouble. Whats the problem? Technique, confidence, tactical instructions?

If there were no targets then cutting inside and delaying is all he can do. Edited January 16, 2013 by Beholder

Whats the problem? Technique, confidence, tactical instructions? 100% agree it was almost as if they were frightened to cross or shoot at times last night. I can accept players like Corey, Mayor and one or two others are young and will develop, but Antonio really needs to work on his crossing and shooting. His pace gets him into some great positions but there is rarely an end product. Again he s young and will hopefully develop this part of his game. Last night was frustrating but the fringe players got a run out and if DJ was in any doubt where improvements need to be made before he isn't now! Aston on Trent Owl
Madine wouldn't have won any headers if they had have crossed and O'Grady spent most of his time wide left..bizarre

I am willing to accept that was the case at times but there were times where Madine had bust a gut to get in the box only to find Mayer, Buxton etc mess about with it and eventually lose possession. I personally think there is a lack of confidence among the fringe players probably bought on by lack of games, I find it bizarre that we don't have regular reserve games for squad players these days. Guest wilyfox
We've needed a decent winger - that can deliver - all season. Mayor needs to buck his ideas up, because I don't think he's impressing anyone at the moment.
tomhollywood
I didn't go to the game but listening to DJ's interview he said at one point we had about 3 opportunities to put the ball in the box and didn't do. That's not down to instruction obviously as he was wondering why we didn't as well. Just to add, it's games like last night where the "fringe" players should be busting a gut to impress if you ask me. DJ has given them an opportunity and they should be man enough to step up and attempt to grab it with both hands. There were targets in there, trust me, he just didn't seem to be confident in his ability to put in a first time cross, which for a Championship winger is frightening. Ash77
curling the cross in like the hull goal against us is technique and we don't really have anyone that can do that, without great coaching and commitment at least. but crosses can be dangerous without being pinpoint if they're driven in hard and low from near the by line. if you drive 3 good low crosses in, on average 1 will be cleared to safety, 1 will be cleared to us and one might land to our forward(s). get 3-5 crosses in and you should have a good chance to score with at least 2 waiting in the box. surely better than going back and letting the opposition regroup anyway.
