This must be something he's missed in his last 18 years of management

townend_owl
He has a reputation of stubbornly picking the same side in a 4-4-2 with two wingers and never changing Till this season He's in a catch 22. If he picked the same side every week and was losing, we'd all be calling for him to change it. I remember just a couple of months ago half of Owlstalk were calling for him to change to 4-5-1. He did (obviously not because of that), and we were no better off as a result. He can't win

YOU CAN'T WIN ITS THE NATURE OF THE BEAST AT EVERY LEVEL OF FOOTBALL MANAGEMENT DJ has been around long enough to know what's what surely?

YOU CAN'T WIN ITS THE NATURE OF THE BEAST AT EVERY LEVEL OF FOOTBALL MANAGEMENT DJ has been around long enough to know what's what surely? Maybe you misunderstand, but that's my point pretty much. When things are bad, you can't win. For everything you do, there's fans calling for countless alternatives. It's almost as if they expect DJ to read Owlstalk and go "oh christ - why didn't I think of that".

TaxiMark
I wonder how often the current top three in the Premier League pick the same team from their last game? The big difference though, 20M players on the bench v 200k players on the bench.
DJMortimer
The big difference though, 20M players on the bench v 200k players on the bench. Well obviously, but it kind of demonstrates the notion of 'a settled team' being just another expedient cliche to use or ignore as applicable. scram
I just did a quick scout of Cardiff's last 3 league games (thought it was unfair to include the Macc cup match yesterday as i expect there would have been lots of changes). In the 3 games vs Palace, Millwall and Birmingham - Cardiff changed their team considerably - there were 5 different starters in the consecutive matches against Birmingham and Millwall and 4 changes between the consecutive matches between Palace and Millwall. But we all know successful teams change their line ups

DJMortimer
Have we a clearly established starting eleven? Not if this forum is anything to go by. You'd think that Kirkland would be a unanimous choice but we've even had several posters wanting himreplaced. So is there really that big a drop off between the quality on the field and that on the bench at any given moment?
TaxiMark
I think what Neil is getting at (I think) is the way there seems to be so much chopping and changing in a headless chicken way, not in a rotation or injury/suspension or simply resting tactical move way. We seem to have brought in a lot of poo players in other words. Edited January 6, 2013 by TaxiMark
