kidc77
It seems every forward we have had in the last 15 ish years have been horrible, terrible, sh*t and worse. The only time we have had a decent return from forwards is when we had decent wingers who could put a ball in the box. So question as above. Are we the worlds unluckiest team when signing forwards or are we playing the wrong tactics?
FlyingOwl
You've answered it yourself. We're not unlucky, we know why our forwards aren't scoring. It's because we don't have a proper old fashioned winger who can cross. Antonio & Helan are brilliant, but they're more of a 'just out-pace them' kind of wingers. JJ is just a 'run and shoot and hope it goes somewhere' kind of winger. And Mayor hasn't had a run crack at it yet for me to judge how good he is. Madine would score a hat-full in this side if we had a Marshall or a Treacy type of winger.
alanharper
Felt sorry for Madine when he came on today, as soon as he got off the bench DJ decided to play our winger up front with him, and put the other striker on the wing.

Exactly! End of the day, Madine scored 18 last season..he IS a goalscorer. But he's 6ft+, there's no point lumping it forwards to him at his chest. We need more crosses into the box for him to get on the end on!
Bluesteel
Its all about money. We have only been able to sign players where there is an obvious catch, i.e. injury prone, lazy, formerly good etc. In league one our strikers, Madine, Mellor etc have been good because we were the richer team in the league. We have tended to prefer to take a gamble with strikers because we cant afford the established ones or the established wingers. kidc77
I just dont see how so many of our managers miss this quite obvious point though. The 2 best periods at our club in recent years have been a/ when we had brunt on the wing b/ Marshalls period and Treacy/antonio last year Both periods we looked dangerous. I understand money isnt going to get thrown around but i am sure there are a few bargain players who could actually provide at least a reasonable amount of crosses to trouble defences
camffiti
We don't sign strikers like ALF, becuase they 'aren't proven at this level', so we end up with the likes of Sidibe ... who is well & truely on the downward turn of the learning curve. In general though, decent strikers don't come cheap ...
FlyingOwl
^^^ this. Not signing Keith Treacy was a massive fail. Also, I blame Owlstalk. He said himself that he didn't want to stay at Burnley with Eddie Howe in charge, they had a major fall out. Now Dyche is in charge they've all kissed and made up, and Treacy wants to stay! BRADDAZ
A better striker will obviously make a difference. It won't make that big of a difference though. Until we change our tactics and actually have plans in how to attack ratherthan the pace and power of Antonio (and Helan) then we will continue to struggle. But yeah we've been unlucky from time to time, perhaps no more so than with Bothroyd, who would've guessed that'd go so badly.
Guest Sniper1
Its because we have the wrong forwards for our wingers and the wrong wingers for our forwards. Let me explain. Madine, Sidibe and COG are all target men, so they show for the ball into feet and win headers etc. They do there work out side the area. Our wingers are the type that will use pace to get to the byline and fizz the crosses in for tap ins but both our Strikers are still stood on the edge of the box trying to catch up with play. We need one or two Strikers who will keep up with our wingers and leave the big CB for dead and get himself a tap in or we need a winger or 2 who can put a cross onto a sixpence for our big forwards. I can't believe DJ and all his coaching staff are missing this.

When you think of the countless times this season weve crossed the ball from the wings and theres not a soul in the box. And it happens week after week. Not sure Madine would be a big goal scorer in this division even with better service, he may be when he develops in a few years, but thats not what we need right now, what we did need was Alf!
