What were the tactics

Recommended Posts

3 days on from the Bolton performance and I'm still confused, I've listened to other people's versions of the game, DJs interview and match reports and still I can't work out what our game plan actually was?????

Earlier in the season, even when we couldn't buy a win at least we could see what we were trying to do, even If it wasn't working. Our recent run was down to good tactics and becoming a team hard to break down then catching teams on the break. But Saturday was worrying cos we didn't seem to have a game plan or nobody to see it wasn't working and make the changes necessary.

2 banks of 4 at home? Full backs on the wing? Winger uptop? No pressure up the field against a team who would've sat back all day for a 0-0 until they realised what little threat we posed so decided to go and beat us.

Our only game plan seemed to be knock it in the corner for poor Antonio to chase and win us a corner or throw in, sidibie wasn't even splitting the centre half n full back when they had possession and was dropping on to Brian stock which left Michail chasing down 4 defenders who just kept knocking it across back 4, no wonder he looked shattered when he did get the ball.

These tactics work and have worked away or even against top sides at home but were never going to work against Burnley, why didn't we change it? Chuck on jj madine n ogrady for mattock prutton n sidibie, gone to attacking 4-4-2 and go at them?

Worrying, very worrying and for the first time I'm sorry DJ but I can't see what you was trying to do or what you were thinking????

The plan was to set up as the away side and not concede hoping to nick a goal and win the game 1-0.

If you had badges like Alan Irvine and Dave Jones you would have known this.

I had a dream last night where you were a 'troll' and got chased by a croc and eaten alive. Was quite disturbing.

I distinctly remember 'Mrs Goggins' too, and I've been scratching my head all morning wondering where I'd heard that name, then I remembered it was you on Owlstalk.

Very, very strange.

Playing JJ as a target man for the last 10 minutes baffled me. Clueless. At least bring the substitute (i.e. Madine) on who can actually win a header.

Bit confused about this, take it we're talking about Burnley not Bolton as stated in the OP?

The tactics (such as they were) might have worked out alright had someone got on the end of one of McCabe's decent crosses in the first half.

The problem was failure to adapt when we went behind. There was no fluency up front so when we needed to press for a goal if anything we actually got worse, giving the ball away and playing a lot of looping forward hopeful passes rather than accurate ones.

My main concern from the last two games was not so much how we played but that, looking at the rest of the season's fixtures, I think we would've wanted 2 points minimum, if not 4. In reality we're running out of winnable games. Neither Huddersfield nor Burnley were great.
