Anthony Gardner

Our defensive shape from Antonio right back to Llera and Gardener was fantastic today. Neutered Bolton completely and left them with a long lofted ball as their only option, which Llera and Gardener just swallowed up.

McCabe was very good - constantly aware of his surroundings, and Kieran Lee was inspired.

However Prutton was class. Particularly in the first half. Superb DM anchor performance.

To be fair, and without sounding like a megsonite, that tactic is exactly what we did in league one with Jones and batth.

Think we'll come unstuck againstbthe best sides doing that but a fair chunk of championship sides lack the quality to open up a side like that.

Might just keep us up..

It's a perfectly valid set up - irrelevant of megson using it or whoever else. Worked really well today and I know what you mean, harked back to when we were just trying to stack up the points regardless of performance.

You're right, we probably wouldn't be able to weather the storm like we did today against some teams, but we've stopped shipping goals and it gives you a really rigid, disciplined shape that's easy to stick to and build from. It breeds confidence because you continually shut everything out and the opposition start to get tired, or frustrated, then you carve out a counter attack through Antonios pace or a Buxton overlap or a set piece.

I think it's worth noting though that Bolton certainly aren't short of quality... There are some really good, ex premiership players there. We were so well organised today. Great result.
