sheffield_dave
Just going to throw this team out there and see what Owlstalk thinks of it, just for sh*ts and giggles. These selections are based on the height of their performances while at Sheffield Wednesday and from our relegation in 2000 to now. GK: Scott Carson LB: Tommy Spurr RB: Tony McMahon CB: Danny Batth CB: Madjid Bougherra LM: Chris Brunt RM: Ben Marshall CM: Jose Semedo CM: Glenn Whelan FW: Kenwyne Jones FW: Gerald Sibon Subs: Lee Grant, Frankie Simek, Mark Beevers, Lee Bullen, Michael Antonio, Marcus Tudgay, Gary Madine Manager: Brian Laws The best squad I could think of since we were relegated. I've gone for Brian as manager for a number of reasons. Nice bloke (lulz), tried playing some decent football which I think he'd actually be able to achieve with that side, and he did a good job for us in tricky times. Also, let's not forget no Wednesday manager has finished higher since 2000. As for the team, biggest thing I could think of when selecting this is that we've had one or two good central midfielders but generally lots of terrible ones, and that we've generally struggled and relied on loans or short term answers at the back. Spurr and Beevers qualify on the basis that for the first 1 to 2 years when they came on the scene, they were pretty decent. And our left back situation has been atrocious. Thoughts? Suggestions and replacements? Notable absentee's? Edited December 14, 2012 by sheffield_dave

Suggestions and replacements? Notable absentee's? I would have Sturrock as boss as he dragged us out of the mire though Laws did do a good job for a decent time under difficult circumstances. Simek would beat McMahon into the team and if Madine is among the 4 best strikers we have had in the last 12 years it's no wonder we have struggled. sheffield_dave
This thread exists because I was thinking "Who in the last 12 years would Madine benefit the most from playing with" (I need to get out more, but I was having a crap so leave me alone), so Madine has to be in this squad. Besides, Madine scored 18 goals last season, has notched a couple this despite being treated unfairly and will hopefully now start showing some of the diamond through his rough. Only other player I think I'd have over him would be MacLean? Edited December 14, 2012 by sheffield_dave

Buxton would get into the squad as well, has been consistently our best defender for a while now. I thinks it says a lot that 3 of your best 11 in the past 12 years are players that have only been only loan to us for a matter of months between them. Guest GreenGoose
I liked Sturrock but I've never seen him jump a canal.
Jürgen Weißbrot
GK: Scott Carson LB: Reda Johnson (Tommy Spurr - hugely overrated) RB: Frankie Simek (pre-injury) CB: Michel Bischoff CB: Madjid Bougherra (although that defence would be pretty hairy at times, it forms part of a team that would out score the opposition, so who cares) LM: Chris Brunt RM: Ben Marshall CM: Ross Barkley (Jose's not got the technical quality sadly) CM: Glenn Whelan FW: Kenwyne Jones FW: Gerald Sibon Subs: Lee Grant, Tony McMahon, Danny Baath, Jose Semedo, Michael Antonio, Marcus Tudgay, Gary Madine Manager: Dave Jones (controversial right now, but he got us promoted recently and will do again in May 2014)
Hawkeye
Steve Watson for Semedo. Totally agree. Buxton for mcmahon, I think I'd rather have deon Burton than sibon too. His hold up play was outstanding, something our current crop if strikers could learn from.
Blueblood
bullen for batth? please tell me you are jesting Well it seems that all you have to do is run around a lot to be rated. So we should really find a place for Joc and Cog too Although Bully will always be a legend in my eyes, but I don't think he'd get in many "best" team selection
sheffield_dave
Bullen is in pretty much as a token for his ability to play in every position and the fact he's a legend. Also, I was REALLY struggling for midfielders at that point and Bullen could and did fit in there from time to time. On reflection, and now I've remembered, I'd probably stick Watson in there instead.
Orlando_Trustful
I stopped reading when I saw Tommy Spurr's name in the OP's team.
Owl.1867
No idea how anyone could stick McMahon ahead of Buxton. Lewis has been our best defender (and occasionally biggest attacking threat) for a while now; he walks into any team if it's our best since relegation. sheffield_dave
I stopped reading when I saw Tommy Spurr's name in the OP's team. So you stopped reading before you got the explanation and context as to why Tommy Spurr is in there. Well done. I was struggling for that left back slot. I mean, that position has been such a well of talen for us for 12 years it was a battle to pick from the best.
jayzman
if Madine is among the 4 best strikers we have had in the last 12 years it's no wonder we have struggled. There's only three strikers in the OP squad. Tudgay is no more a striker than Reda. But I would have had Maclean in that squad as well as Madine. The Bischoff selection is intesting. He only played a few matches, looked poo poo hot, but we spotted majid instead and got him. Then Bischoff disappeared. Just shows you that it's dangerous to pick players on a short spell of performance.
Lee Strafford
Ok my best team from between 2000 and now would be:- GK - Grant LB - Spurr (before his confidence was destroyed) CB - Walker (still playing for us in 2001) CB - Batth RB - Simek (that injury cost him and us big time) DM - Watson AM - Whelan AM - Barkley (best quality player since Brunt and would not have struggled alongside these two) LW - Brunt ST - Jones RW - Marshall Subs - Carson, Bougherra, Beavers, O'Brien (first time round), Antonio, Tudgay, Sibon (turned up and dug in after relegation from EPL) Manager - Laws (best performer under the worst circumstances) Now to really put this in perspective you have to look at the worst:- GK - Ola Tidman LB - Beswetherick CB - Branston CB - Westwood RB - Hendon LM - Barry Murphy CM - Lunt CM - Jonk RM - Uchechi ST - Jeffers ST - Showunmi Subs - Adamson, Paul Smith, Kasnik, Jimmy Smith, Phil Scott, Leon Clarke (when he was mardi and overweight it brought everyone else down), De Bilde (on strike in contrast to Sibon who dug in) Manager - Karen bishop basher (yes he "effectively" was for large spells) - it always destroys team morale when someone outside the training ground recruits players and or defines / controls the working environment of the playing staff.
