Player Performances - Season So Far

Recommended Posts

1 Chris Kirkland Not done much wrong. Doesn't organise as well as Bywater but a better shot stopper.

2 Lewis Buxton Good games and bad games, still a question mark about if he's good enough.

3 Reda Johnson Started the season scoring goals in a winning team. Got injured. Has been missed.

4 Anthony Gardner Slow start but has had a few decent games. Not as dominant as most of us expected. Injury prone.

5 Martin Taylor Awful start. Really poor positionally, couldn't win a header. Hopefully his form is starting to turn.

6 Jose Semedo Big disappointment so far. Not been able to get a hold on many games. Not helped with the change of system.

7 Michail Antonio Main attacking threat in nearly every game. Lots more to come though. Cant do it all himself.

8 Chris Lines Injured most of the season. Still finding his feet.

9 Gary Madine Another disappointment. Anyone with half a brain can see there is a very good footballer in there. Unfortunately Madine lets himself down with his.

10 Chris Maguire Not had a chance due to injury.

11 Jermaine Johnson Typical JJ. Looks great in patches, anonymous in others. Will never change.

12 Chris O’Grady Works hard. Really hard. Not quite good enough as a footballer at this level though. Has been the best of the strikers by not being utterly rubbish.

14 Joe Mattock Hugely disappointing. Thought that he would make left back his own but not happened due to poor form and poor fitness.

15 Lozano Rodri Great start but nothing since. Excellent technically but struggles to find enough space to show his ability.

16 Rhys McCabe Great potential. Needs to be looked after. Lost a bit of confidence like the rest of the midfield.

17 Nejc Pecnik Technically good. Cant see what his best position is. Not done enough.

18 Danny Mayor Not had many chances.

19 Mark Beevers Didn't do much wrong. Got shipped out. Will probably go on to have a good career.

20 Keiran Lee Injuries and lack of belief from the manager means we haven't seen him much.

21 Paul Corry Lovely footballer. Could be great for us in the future. Needs to toughen up a bit.

22 Mamade Sidibe Waste of a loan and a shirt so far. Panic signing.

23 Jay Bothroyd A couple of times he has shown his talent. Not enough though and sulking when he doesn't get the ball has not got down well with fans (and team mates).

24 Jeremy Helan Been steady. Decent stop gap. Worth his place until Reda is back.

25 David Prutton Been out on loan after being deemed surplus. Plunged back in and has done quite well.

26 Daniel Jones Not good enough at this level. Supposed to be the quickest player at the club but that doesn't help anyone if you have no positional sense, cant pass, dont stop a cross, etc, etc.

28 Giles Coke Vanished. Picking up a wage and doing nothing. Waste of talent.

32 Miguel Llera No doubting his passion for the club and has scored goals and had good games defensively BUT costs us too many goals. His passing has also not been as good this year.

43 Stephen Bywater Mentalist.

You only get one chance at a 1000th post Poric,

How do you think you did?

We will see pal. I think it looks nice. Was going to use colours but I'm too lazy.

I'm interested to know what you mean with....

Jose Semedo - Not helped with the change of system

??

I dont think he has been comfortable playing in the 3 man midfield. He hasn't seemed to know his role. Maybe it is more to do with the step up in class. Who knows why he hasn't played well this season very often?

He's poor the majority of the season.

However, the formation change did more for Semedo's game than any other player. Helooked a lot worse in a 2 man midfield, rather than a 3. His best games have come in a 3.

The reason being, in a three in he can simply break up play and make a very simple pass (or try to). In a two man in the Championship, you need more in your locker than that.

Ultimately I don't think he's good enough for this level.

All reasonable players individually - all playing as if they are individuals and not a team.

It's about being the right place to receive the ball and give your teammates options when in possession.

It's galling to watch us play too deep and not having the link from midfield to the front. This maybe one of the reasons why Semedo and others have looked out of sorts and lose the ball. We can't simply retain possession until Antonio shakes off his tow or three markers and then release the ball in hope to him.

There are others who can shoot, make runs, gamble and even pull the opposition around leaving space for others to occupy or run into.

We are too static, easy to mark and the movement off the ball is truly shocking even if we are occasionally in attacking positions. The amount of times this year that experienced players have waited for the ball to come to them or not been interested in picking up second balls is appalling.

It's a coaching and management issue.

Like watching an under 9s team.

Everybody stood still, big lad at the back smacks it forward and they all run in the same direction, chasing after it.

The ball moves, and then Wednesday react, there is absolutely no foresight to any of the play, nobody makes a run, points the finger and says play it there, they all just stand and watch whoever has got the ball.

Amateur stuff.

Thought it was a very good OP, but the only one I disagree with is Madine. I don't think he's done much wrong when he's actually started a game.

Neither do I to be honest. I think he could have done more though. Also, there must be a reason he gets left out so often and it is probably to do with his attitude in some way. I like Madine but I dont think he comes across as the most intelligent lad. He probably thinks that he is better than the other strikers and instead of going "I'll work hard and show them" he sulks a bit.

H has also missed having a decent crosser of the ball at the club. He was definitely playing better when Marshall and then Treacy were in the team. He needs the service to be good and he will score goals.

This is a big thing for me. Why are all these players not playing better?

DJ just can not keep coming out with the same excuses as he has been. The players are his. They are coached by his team.

Was miles off the pace when returning from injury (same last season too). Latterly I'd agree, not done too much wrong but once opinions are set they take some changing. He has the talent. Personally I think that if he'd been fit and played alongside COG.... properly deployed and not used just as two big lumps like sometimes last season then they could cause defenders some problems at this level. They'd need the proper service as I've said and that's been lacking. OK we're unlikely to get another Marshall and Treacy has issues so you'd hope that Mayor (or even Helan?) might step up or we'll need to recruit another left midfielder.

Decent OP by the way.

Forget last season, the game against Bristol City last weekend might as well been a footballing driving range for most of the team to get it to Madine & COG.

Good OP, and a fair assessment of most of the players. Thought you were a bit harsh on Buxton (who for me has been our best player), Daniel Jones (May not be good enough but still the best left back we own) and madine (enough).

I thought Kieran Lee was progressing nicely until he got injured. Now all our centre backs are over 30 trying Buxton at CB to give us some pace there and using Lee as a right back might be an idea.

True but you'd hope that that was down to confidence issues rather than tactical. Better players than those two would struggle to deliver their best playing up front for us at the moment.
