Marcus Tudgay promises not to celebrate when he scores

Recommended Posts

MARCUS Tudgay has promised not to celebrate if he scores against former club Sheffield Wednesday in Saturday’s South Yorkshire derby with Barnsley.

Ex-Owls favourite Tudgay is enjoying life on loan at Oakwell and has scored twice in his last three Barnsley matches.

But the 29-year-old, who spent five seasons at Hillsborough, won’t celebrate out of respect for supporters who he said were “brilliant” with him in his time with the club.

Tudgay told The Star: “It’s in some people’s make-up to celebrate when they play they’re old club - but that’s not me.

“The Sheffield Wednesday supporters are fantastic. They’re passionate, caring and honest. It would be a great feeling for me to get a goal, but if I did manage to stick one away I wouldn’t celebrate out of respect for the Wednesday fans. They were brilliant with me in my time with the club.

“I can go back to Hillsborough with my family and I get a great reception from a lot of the fans. That means a lot to me. My family will be definitely coming to watch the game. I’m really looking forward to it.”

The Reds last played the Owls in January 2010 when they were beaten 2-1 at home.

And prior to that the Reds’ last home win over their derby rivals came with a 2-1 win October 2008.

Each derby fixture is unique, with both sets of supporters hungry for local bragging rights against their arch-rivals.

But this weekend’s Championship clash has added significance with both clubs struggling in the relegation zone after a frustrating start to the season.

“You seem to prepare a little bit different for a derby game; maybe it’s the added importance of the fixture,” revealed Tudgay, who scored 51 goals in his Owls career.

“Hopefully we’ll be calm, but also play with a high tempo and get a victory. Derby matches always have a great atmosphere and this Saturday will be no different. We were unlucky not to get a win against Leicester City on Saturday, but we all feel that a win isn’t far around the corner.

“I’ve come to Barnsley to get some games because my contract’s up in the summer and I want to earn myself a new deal.

“The lads have been tremendous with me ever since I joined the club. They’re honest and hard-working, which makes me believe that we’ll turn things around.

“It has been tough with the run we’ve been on, but the match is on Sky, so there’s no better game in which to perform and get a good result.”

Tudgay is with the Reds until January having arrived on a temporary basis from Nottingham Forest.

And although the 5ft 10in hitman would love to earn himself a permanent contract at the City Ground, he told The Star he’d love to stay with Barnsley for longer. “I’m just enjoying playing games,” added the former Derby County forward. I’m here until January, but if things are going well then I’d be open to staying longer.

“I’m enjoying playing for Barnsley - and it’s been nice to score a couple of goals in my last few games.

“It will be strange playing Sheffield Wednesday, but it’s back to business.

“I think any professional would tell you that you have to focus on the match and nothing else.”

A good chap, won't ever forget his great goal against the Blunts, and the way him and Leon Clarke destroyed Burnley. Not that many great moments but liked him when he played for us.

No disrespect intended, he could also be in a Wednesday XI of funny names lol

Laws ruined him by playing him wide but will be remembered for the goal at The Lane.

He was at his most prolific out wide though to be fair.

I think it was more Tudgay deciding he didn't want to play there which made him go off the boil.

Plus the Burnley stuff played a major part in him constantly blowing cold for the last year he was with us.

Some great days with Tudders in our side..

Will have the freedom of all the space we are allowing teams to have outside the D at the moment.

We will need to keep tight on him as well all know what he can do from range...

That season when we nearly sneaked into the playoffs, him and Burton were outstanding for us, had a great understanding.

I wish him well.

He scored 2 in 2, and was then dropped at Leicester, in true Keith Hill style.

I like him. Better than I expected him to be. And I would like to see him up top on Saturday alongside Craig. But I have a feeling Hill will go with just one up front again.

Still, he's not a bad sub option I suppose.

And tbh, it's the imbecile named Wiseman in defence that plays every week despite gifting almost 60% of our goals conceded. The pillock.

Hope he gets a good ovation from us to be fair, not singing his name during the game like with Marshall but if he takes a corner in front of us or after the game walking back to the tunnel
