I would not include a keeper in my top 100 worst players i think. Craig Rocastle can be forgiven as he had his career highlight in cardiff, played well above himself when it mattered. Neither would make my worst 10 though. Bothroyd is in for lack of effort alone. He had ability but only used it when the cameras turned up against Leeds and yet still got picked every game. His inclusion directly coincided with our decent start to that season hitting the buffers. De Bilde can join him on that front - came in with a reputation for being a fiery character, his melancholy apparently caused by his dogs being quarantined. Ola Tidman was embarrassing at times in goal. Kim Olsen was never a proper professional footballer surely. Another from that era, Paul Smith was completely underwhelming. Poor old Jon Beswetherick. Seems a bit harsh to include Chris Carr as thankfully his Wednesday career lasted all of one or two games. Ashley Westwood was consistently bad. Tony Crane looked like he had wandered off the Kop in full kit and managed to get a game, more prolific in the pubs in town than on the pitch at that time. Seem to remember Jimmy Smith being a bit of a billy big balls when he came on loan from Chelsea - all hype and no trousers. Craig Armstrong, Brian Barry Murphy and Dean Smith were all pretty useless for us in the same team but as I've picked 9 already I'll go for Armstrong. I've probably done this list before in this thread all those years ago when it first came up and probably listed a few different names but these are the ones currently springing to mind! Most of us aren't old enough to have a vivid memory of a player who played one game for us in 1961 mate. Fair play to you though, if we were old enough to be around to watch us back then most of us wouldn't have a vivid memory to fall back on full stop! Not sure why you are trying to entice me with a holiday refund, thankfully I don't have one booked! Agree on the issue that some might say is pedantic in reference to 'all-time' in the OP though. That's why I have referred to players I have seen instead and pointed out that thankfully I wasn't around in the 70's to see us suffer. Emerson Thome Posted May 29, 2020 Share Posted May 29, 2020 (edited) Sometimes these threads seem to go far and wide and miss the target by miles - Andy Hinchcliffe wasn't even in the worst 10 players in our squad at the time, Efan Ekoku was brilliant at times (not sure what people were expecting of a 35 year old), Stephen Bywater literally has the second best goals conceded to games record in the history of Sheffield Wednesday goalkeepers (after Scott Carson, if you're wondering). Just by virtue of getting into the team it usually means the player if better than most of their rivals - but I guess there are a few different categories of 'bad' player: The one or two bad games and never seen again: Chris Carr seems to be the classic in this field, Matt Tumilty or the wonderfully named Zigor Aranalde. Winner in this category = Chris Carr (as no-one can remember any of the others) The loan player with a shocking attitude: Jay Bothroyd, Leon Knight, Danny Butterfield, et al, although I don't think this category really counts as they are not proper Wednesday players. But the winner here is surely England's Jay Bothroyd. The terrace boo-boy: Chris Morris, Leon Clarke, Joey Pelupessy, etc. This category is often harsh, as often these players are limited players doing a job at a difficult time. Winner = Ashley Westwood, no other player used to bring the same fear in the pit of my stomach. He actually played 96 times for us. You've probably seen as much of Ashley Westwood playing for Wednesday as Benito Carbone. Or Di Canio and Degryse put together. The international superstar: But then it turns out we've signed his brother by mistake - some who spring to mind are the 'Romanian Rooney', Sergiu Bus, the World Cup's Nejc Pecnik, Scotland's Next Bright Young Thing Stevie May, Barcelona's Rodri. Winner = there can only be one, Patrick Blondeau. The crock: Wednesday seem to specialise in this category, Danny Wilson signed three - Simon Donnelly, Phil O'Donnell (RIP) and Phillip Scott in one 3 months splurge. Another of his signings, Wim Jonk developed a strange allergic reaction to the Championship. In recent years we've seen, or not seen, the likes of Urby Emanuelson, Almen Abdi. Winner = a surprise title for Phillip Scott, scores a nice goal on his home debut, and then misses the next game because "the ground is a bit harder than he's used to", and never seems to get over the aversion to South Yorkshire grass. The 'bad influence': Fernando Forestieri, Lewis McGugan, Paul Warhurst, Paolo Di Canio, Gilles De Bilde. Winner = none, don't deserve to be mentioned in this context. Everyone loves a maverick. The striker who couldn't hit a cow's arse with a banjo: Andy Booth (the later years), David Graham, Kim Olsen, Colin West (although his record isn't that bad), Grant Holt. Winner = Barry Corr, 9 starts + 10 sub appearances, 0 goals, 0 assists. Surely the most unproductive Wednesday striker ever. The phantom: Were they real, did I imagine them? Rocky Lekej, Urby Emanuelson, Ally wee pipe, Will De Havilland, Felipe Melo. Winner = who can say? Maybe they never really existed? What a waste of money: It's not that they are necessarily bad per se, its just the opportunity cost of what we could have brought in on the wages/transfer fee - Andy Sinton, Almen Abdi (again), David Jones, Joost van Aken. Winner = it's a tie between Francis Jeffers (when we didn't have a pot to píss in) and Jordan Rhodes (when we did). The underwhelming youth prospect: Everyone loves a trier, and it feels harsh to turn on one of our own, but you paid to watch Waddle marauding down the wing, not Lee Briscoe, or would rather we'd kept hold of Hirst than Humphreys. We brought back Carlton Palmer, so why am I watching Tony Crane? Winner = Steven Haslam, who always seemed to be on the verge of breaking through, but never quite as a Centre Back, nor a Full Back, or even in midfield. And never quite made the grade in the Premier League, or even in the Championship, and not even in League One. The Beswetherick: Some legends defy characterisation. In truth, despite the fact I watched him play on several occasions I can't really remember anything he did any more. But I know it was bad. And over the years, the legend grows and grows. The only other player who even has half a shout in this category is the tenacious Ola Tidman.
