Government hiking tax on beer is crushing pub industry.

Now that most community pubs have gone they want to hike beer prices in supermarkets.

They won´t be happy until we are all sat at home sipping Horlicks every night.

Thing is we don't drink at home, we go out to socialize and have a few, so no pubs I'll be teetotal !

Bears more than a passing resemblance to Noddy Holder !

Used to be a good night out on Langsett Road, Masons, then onto Burgoyne, past the Cuthbert on to King George V, then head back to the Wellington (now Hillsborough Hotel), and finish with after-bird in the Cuthbert.

Only the Masons and the now Hillsborough Hotel left.....

Yep, could always start in Hillsborough beforehand, or do Walkley when it had pubs. Sportsman, then the Crown, across to the Florist, onto the top Freedom, one in the Rose, down to the Palm, round the corner to the Belle Vue, and late finish in the bottom Freedom. No wonder I always used to be skint!

Walkley used to be a good wonder as well and a great drink.

It did, you also had the Royal Hotel and Heavygate, then a short wander to Commonside with the Springy, the Closed Shop and the Hallamshire Arms.

Alas those times will never ever come back as most of the ale houses mentioned have either been knocked down or converted to other use. Sad state of affairs

Pubs shut down if nobody goes in em

vicious circle, drop off in decent pay, less to spend, pubs shutting due to being empty in mid week, guys going out drinking less, take the missus out for a meal instead, might go indian, italian, chinese etc.

it's all been pressure on the industry, but...

mate works as sales head for a small sheffield brewery, and he says they're doing well, so it looks like specialist beers are holding up.

tbh, when i go out, i want some atmosphere, good music playing, and plenty of eye candy.

Smoking ban and high Prices killed it.

i feel your gonna answer 'roll ups' but i was in the local shop last Chrissy and a woman was buying a packet of 20 for 'her friends' present, i thought 20 cigs aren't much of a present, then £12...

i thought who can afford to smoke these days?

20 a day, plus a few more at the w/e (especially if watching wednesday) is around £10 kpa. :duntmatter:

remember back in (i'm thinking it was 79/80) going to the final game of the season in exeter.

went with the anglers rest from wombwell, stayed in torquay for the w/e.

the anglers was the first pub i drank in with my school mates, erm! i mean work mates.

first drink at great yorkshire show (pints of courage tavern in those huge pots it was sold in), then when the opportunity arose the anglers.

went by it last week, looks though it will be one of the next ones to go, be able to put 4/5 town houses up on the footprint and car park.

Yeah,

I usually pass the Anglers at the weekend when visiting the mother-in-law 🐉and noticed it seemed shut (it was one of the few pubs that closed for the afternoon at 3pm even before the lockdown).  The Last Post across the road has been closed for a while and is now a convenience store.

Used to go with the Anglers a few times myself during the early 90's.  I think they still run a minibus to away games (well, they did before the shutdown!!)
