OFFICIAL - Joe Mattock Signs

What we do know is we're getting a young attack minded player. All this talk of 20k is stupid because we know Mandaric isn't a man who pays over the top he tries to spend money well. He wouldn't break the bank for Marshall and its now looking like he won't for Antonio so why would he for a left back whose got mixed reviews.

Close to signing according to Sky Sports.

I've had SSN on all morning. No mention of it. So where has this rumour emerged from?

Deon Burton? Oh dear.....

Exactly what I thought, then I remembered he's 35 years old, which led to a triple "oh dear"!! lol

Sky Sports understands Sheffield Wednesday are closing in on signing former West Brom defender Joe Mattock on a free transfer.

The 22-year-old was released by the Baggies last month after struggling to make an impact at the club since their return to the Premier League.

He spent the second half of the season on loan at Brighton, making 15 Championship appearances, and had been linked with a permanent move to the Amex Stadium.

However, it appears the Owls, who won promotion to the Championship this season, are now frontrunners for the left-back's signature and are close to snapping him up on a Bosman.

Crystal Palacespacer.gif and Sheffield Unitedspacer.gif are also thought to be keen on the young defender. :tango:

This.

It has been on Radio Sheffield all morning (well, my drive into work between 7:45 and 9am) as well.

I thought the story went that we and Leicester had basically offered the same amount in transfer fee but, being a division above and flush Marshall chose Leicester. Likely that they offered better terms too (but no proof of that).

Edit-agree with you that MM is a shrewd business man and won't be taken for a ride. Just saying that we are able to compete with most now.

uh-oh.... We've been spotted

"They are indeed, but you should check out the reaction to this thread by a few of their gobshites on owlstalk. We are apparently small shitty little Brighton who have no chance when the big boys like them come calling. They point to their huge gates as proof of this.

Odd then, that our gates were consistently better than theirs last season. They may have averaged a few more last season, but this was swelled by 3 MASSIVE gates which can be accommodated in their cavernous outdated rust bucket and it just goes to show how plastic a large portion of their support actually is. Their median league gate (middle) gate was actually 2,000 lower than ours at just 18,000.

In any case, this attendance guff ignores the more important corporate facilities available at other clubs. The Amex for example can generate more money than many bigger grounds just because we can host nearly 3,000 corporate guests in 1901. I bet even the 37,000 capacity Hillsborough struggles to compete with that.

So yeah, of course Wednesday are historically a bigger club than us and most of the division, but some of their fans really do have MASSIVE delusions of grandeur. One crap season and we'll see 17,000 rattling around oversized Hillsborough again. (That's 4,000 fewer than we've sold season tickets this season)"

This is the type of comment that really irritates me. The one thing that has remained constant through the last 15 years has been the support. Considering the dross we've had to put up with, the fact that our support has remained pretty much constant is nothing short of astounding. A lot of people will be in for a shock next season; the Hillsborough faithful will be out in force.

BRUCE LEE

He'll be based close to the midlands, working for a manager who he believes will improve him as a player and playing at Hillsborough every other week...

Granted I wear blue and white specs, but players constantly bang on about Hillsborough playing a big part in their decision.

The £20k wages is utter shybo,... not sure why they keep banging that drum.

we averaged slightly more, but their gates were better? well you cant argue with the facts! Let them have their few seasons in the sun, I'm sure Southend were in a similar boat not too long ago

To any Brighton fans snooping around.

No way will we have offered Mattock 20k a week, absolutely no way. Half that and take some more off and you might be close. He is coming here because we are a MASSIVE club and much more attractive to play for than you. A clu with rich history, a big traditional stadium, ambition and the means and capabilities to get back into the top flight. That is why he will likely move to us. Hope you understand now.
