Guest intercity0wl
Police operation in place for busy day of Steel City sport Published 4 May, 2012 Tomorrow is going to be an eventful day of sport in Sheffield and police are advising football fans and commuters to allow extra time to get around the city. Additional police resources will be on duty to ensure it’s safe and enjoyable as the League One promotion race reaches its climax and Rotherham United play their final game at the Don Valley Stadium. With the semi-finals of the World Snooker Championship and the FA Cup Final kicking off at 5.15pm, it promises to be an exciting day for sports fans. Superintendent Jason Harwin, commander for tomorrow’s operation, said: “Our focus will be on safety around the matches at Hillsborough and Don Valley Stadium, and the beamback event at Bramall Lane, but the wider policing operation will keep in mind non-sports fans getting around the city. “Whatever happens tomorrow, the blue half or the red of half of Sheffield will be celebrating come 5pm but we could be seeing a double celebration in a few weeks time so I encourage people not to spoil things by causing trouble in the city.†South Yorkshire Police has been working closely with the football clubs, licensed premises and other safety partners in planning this Saturday’s operation and officers will be on hand throughout the day, during the build up to the matches through to post-match celebrations in the city centre. Superintendent Harwin said: “With so much happening in the city, our advice is to allow extra travelling time – especially the 38,000 people who have tickets for the Sheffield Wednesday match at Hillsborough. I also want to encourage responsible drinking, especially before the matches. You might have a ticket but turn up worse for wear and you could be refused entry.†
