How many points

For Sheffield Wednesday to be promoted via automatic last season we would have needed 93 points to overhaul Southampton.

91 points was only good enough for third last year.....

Third place points total means nothing

Yeah.. but in all these theories we are the second place team.

So as the second place team we need to get above the average for 3rd place.

If you get what I'm saying..

The Wednesday way will be to get enough points to go up in any of the last 10 years...except this one!

I think we'll need 92. So, 8 wins and a draw from last 10.

If we do that we'll deserve it!

Agreed I said 92 before Saturday. Eight more wins and we're there. Draw at Notts County and Huddersfield cause all the rest are winnable.

Yeah I understand what people are saying, but its completely flawed

88 points wasn't good enough for second last year because Southampton got 92.....

We could have finished on 91 points last year and it wouldn't have been enough.....

Yooooooonited have un-workable it up plenty of times on the last day of the season alone.

A late Chelsea goal one season sent them down, and then we know how their old favourite Unsworth shoved it up them for Wigan on the last day.

As can be seen now, they're choking big time. I'd be more than comfortable matching their results for the next few weeks.

The pressure is always on the team in second. Would be perfectly happy snatching it off them in the last minute of injury time in the last game.

"perfectly happy"!! That would be the funniest thing ever!

You don't look at it that way.

To get automatic promotion last year you had to get 88 points to finish above Huddersfield.

It is irrelevant how many points Southampton got above that. They were superfluous.

It may be that Southampton got 100 points. So, what?

They needed 88 points to get second spot.

That is what you look at - what 3rd got. Not what second achieved.

Huddersfield got 87.

You look at what it takes to beat 3rd spot, on average.

And, on average it is nowhere near 92 points.

Mmmmm, I wonder if Charlton take that view?

There'll be a few more twists before the season is out of that I'm sure

Probably not, but unless they lose the next 3 games and we win them all, we aren't chasing Charlton.

What I mean is, in a race as tight as this, it's much better to be the team in form, chasing a team starting to wobble, than the other way around.

Yeah true can you imagine going into the last game of the season vs Wycombe needing a win for automatic..

It will be Crystal Palace all over again yet this time it's to go up - don't know if i could cope

Never thought at any stage in that game we were going to do it.

Hoped we could, tried to make myself believe we would, but deep down I just never felt we would.

This year the feeling is very different

Hi everyone,

I am a final year student at Hallam Uni and currently writing a dissertation on what motivates fans to attend matches. I have drawn up a quick questionnaire and would be very grateful if anyone could take a moment to fill it in for me.

Good luck in your search for promotion this year.

Chris

Okay let's agree to disagree

I'd just like to know how many points we needed last year for automatic promotion via 2nd place by my calculations it was 93 points not 88

Whoever secures second spot this season, *fingers crossed it's us* however many points they/we get that will be the bench mark

Can't do that.

You are wrong. Sorry.

So you are saying that 3rd place this year will reach 92 points? Thus, we have to get 93 points.

Based on the knowledge that to beat Southampton last year you would have to have gained 93 points.

But Southampton came second last year. Huddersfield came 3rd with 87 points.

And, you suggest other posters logic is flawed.

Baffling stuff.

that is only true if you are southampton. if you are anyone else then you have to have more points than southampton.

Not really concentrating on how many points we need to finish with for 2nd. For me if we can go into the last 6 games 2 or 3 points behind whoever is in 2nd place then I'll take that now.

Everyone's going on about who's got the toughest or easiest run-in but we are entering the business end of the season and just about every team has something to play for, so that makes every game a tough one and there will be some unexpected results as we already have seen in the last couple of weeks.
