Footnote to topic...

Sunderland's League One attendance against Bradford today was 46,039.

That's still over 3,000 short of the record set at Hillsborough for an English third tier fixture.

I've mentioned it before on here, and incredibly, got negged for it.

We do NOT hold the record for a 3rd tier attendance.

April 7th 1947 3rd Div South.

Cardiff City v Bris City 51,626.

Hard to see that ever getting beaten.   We would have beaten it if the police had allowed more fans in.  I missed it cos I couldn't get a ticket.

I began watching football in 1958 so I'm well aware what a third tier crowd means.  Until August 1958 there was no 4th div. Just 3rd south and 3rd north.

The Cardiff v bris C game was not in div one or div two.   It was in the 3rd tier Southern section.

I'd love us to have the record, but we don't.

Wednesday have the record of over 49,000 for the old division 3

Some where i remember Aston Villa Getting over 50,000 i am sure

I remember Man City averaging over 32,000 for the third .......

A bit of an unforgivable mistake there Bournemouth, Aston Villa v Bournemouth a few years previous to the BDM. The game attracted over 49K but not quite so many as the BDM.

Wasn't it about 48.750? Prior to the BDM it was the record for the third division though.

Maybe not, but we do hold the record attendance for the Third Division!

Villa Bournemouth was 48110 compared to our 49309.  Sadly as an attendance geek I recollect this off the top of my head

We had slightly more (49,357) for our league cup tie in the 80s when we played Liverpool

Back in the day it was a common thing to understate the attendance figures ....

The ground was rammed that day ...

Probably more than the official attendance ?

All the same apart from the 91 final and 93 semi "The" greatest football match ever to witness as a Wednesday fan along with the other "49 thousand and so" ....

It was special .......

Talk sport were banging on about it earlier today, biggest league 3 attendance in 39 years. Followed by the obligatory North East fans are amazing blah blah, not really though 2 cities 2 teams and a huge catchment area. Seem to remember empty spaces at the stadium of light last year.

Man City were at Maine Road with a capacity of around 32,000 give or take.

It would be nice to get more than L***ds 38,000 record.

Are we missing something here? 38082 v Wycombe in 2012, wasn't a bad turn out!

That season the Blunts got just over 45,000 for the return match ...... a great tribute to the football in Sheffield drawing 95,000 fot the two games,,,,,, loads were locked out as well at the lane as i remember

Great footballing city. Formed the first professional football team.

Downside is the scrubbers took over the lane when we left, well, 22 years later. About as fast as Wilder's wit.
