Madine/O'Grady - does it work?

Of course they can play together.

Like Jowl mentioned a willing runner form centre midfield and also two quick wingers that would allow us to control the ball and then play it in behind their defence.

The key is getting behind the opposition's defence.

In the first half they had it easy everything was infront of them, the only time we got behind them they hauled Madine down.

JJ comes on the ball starts getting play in around and behind they fullback. Panic stations for them, imagine if we had the same option the otherside and fullbacks willing to get betond the widemen.

Reda did it once and put in a quality ball.

Buxton loves overlapping but played further up the pitch.

Ostemobor never once attempted to, why I do not know I always thought he like getting forward but in the last two matches looked very reluctant.

jj clicked with o'grady against west ham

it's all about finding the perfect foil, target man and someone to playoff him with either pace or craft

madine and o'grady ain't the real deal i'm afraid, way too similar in terms of how they play which has seriously affected our overall style of play

sort it gary

Didn't Rochdale play O'Grady on the left?

I don't know what we don't try that with Madine and Lowe up top.

We have to try something else now..

COG is very strong and has an excellent touch. He lacks the pace to carry a constant goal threat but does a great job for the team. GM will not drop him and rightly so because he is central to most of our attacking play. He played very well against Charlton when many of his team-mates didn't turn up. Played well enough today too. Madine is regaining his fitness and sharpness and will score goals. How can it not work? We missed lots of chances today, with Madine missing a couple but more imnportantly we conceded two and didn't see the game out.

They are the first choice when we are at home. we need to stop leaking soft goals, not worry about who scores them for us.

It's a shame to want a player like O'Gray dropped. He always works so hard, and has a great turn on him, but we need some flare, and pace up front, someone who can make runs through their defence. We certainly don't need two people who are good at holding the ball up like Madine and O'Grady, both playing at the same time.

As others have said, it simply comes down to a lack of goals or even confidence in his own finishing abilities which mean that despite his hard work COG needs to be dropped and time allowed for Madine and Lowe, who both have goals in them, to develop a partnership. This said, another striker in with the added diamention of pace would vastly improve the situation.

In short, no it doesn't work.

Makes us one dimensional, ball doesn't stick, and the gap between them and our central midfield duo is too big.

Feel sorry for Lowe who makes intelligent runs, is full of passion, great work rate, and will get you goals.

What a difference JJ made. For all his faults it was a great goal, and when he draws three men to him, we actually create space in behind the defence. No one else offers this.

No hoofball doesn't work.

COG tries but there is just no end product. He's a league 1 Heskey but a bit more stable!

the fact is everybody seems to fail to click with cog...

The fact is we are in the play-offs by 8 points and O'Grady has played in 18 of the league games.

What seems to happen is that a popular opinion gets built up (i.e. O'Grady shouldn't be criticised because he brings so much to the team) and then some people want to go against it, so whenever we slip up, which let's be honest hasn't be very often, he gets targeted because he doesn't score many.

Every player has flaws but ask the Rochdale fans how good O'Grady is, he has been key to us being where we are so your point that 'everybody fails to click with him' is not true.

COG's main quality is you can't push him off the ball.

Problem is, while he is dwelling on the ball and fending off defenders he slows everything down so that they can get orgainised.

and like others have said, cog/ madine together causes us to just hoof it up to them.

O'grady is a strong player.

That's basically it.

This^ and COG has a great attitude. Not enough for a centre forward though, that could get us promoted and live in the championship. I'm beginning to think that Megsons stubbordness, regarding his own signing are gonna hurt us.
