Guest Wildman1867
The Owls' first pre-season friendly of the 2011-12 campaign ended in a goalless draw with Russian outfit FC Volga Novgorod. Played under a strong sun amid the glorious settings of the Austrian Alps, the game was a good workout for Wednesday against very capable opposition. The Russians arrived in Austria on the back of a mid-season break from their domestic top-flight and were duly sharp, shading possession and chances overall. Volga had the first sight of goal inside two minutes when Mate Vatsadze broke in on goal after intercepting a loose ball but his tame shot was comfortably collected by Richard O'Donnell. The Russian side then forced three corners in quick succession without troubling O'Donnell - but the Wednesday keeper was called into action on the 15-minute mark and proved equal to the test. Mersudin Ahmetovic found space on the left side of the penalty area and cut inside to hit a firm shot across O'Donnell which the youngster parried to safety with a fine diving save. The soaring temperatures may have impacted on the pace of the game - which was still lively - but not the commitment as the referee intervened on numerous occasions in following strong challenges from both sides. David Prutton saw yellow with Gia Grigalava when the two midfielders clashed just before the interval and Sanchez Jose followed suit right on the half time whistle. The Owls made five changes for the second period, which could and should have seen Volga off to a flier. Ahmetovic played Vatsadze through on goal but the forward fluffed a low shot that rolled harmlessly wide. Sanzhar Tursunov then blasted high and wide before Nicky Weaver did well to parry a fierce drive from Jose round the post for a corner. Wednesday were denied what seemed a fair shout for a penalty just after the hour when Liam Palmer went down under a challenge from Rusian Adzhindzhal as the Owls edged more and more into the game as the second period unfolded. But there was to be no breakthrough on either side and a share of the spoils for each was perhaps the right result. Owls: O'Donnell (Weaver 46), Otsemobor, Reda Johnson, Beevers, Bennett (Reynolds 46), Jermaine Johnson, Prutton (O'Connor 46), Semedo, Sedgwick (Palmer 46), Daniel Jones, Madine (Morrison 46) FC Volga: Abayeb, Grigalava, Buivolov, Belozyorov, Salukvadze, Adzhindzhil (Khojava 76), Crosas, Tursunov, Jose (Nikita 62), Vatsadze, Ahmetovic (Khazov 68) Sounds like O'Donnell had a good game
Lincowl
Sounds like they more than shaded the chances. ::
eckington owl
And by the sounds of it we bullied them a bit. It's about time we showed we are not prepared to be pushed around. Agreed, it happened numerous occasions last season. Lets see how we mix it up with Leeds and Stoke.
BIG D
I'm pretty sure Wednesday Player subscribers were promised the bee's knees when it came to coverage of this game. Ultimately, there was no streaming, no commentary, and no text updates. So anyone who subscribed to Player for this game got 'Owls 0-0 FC Volga'. Was an attendance announced? It was but we were asked to keep it a secret from non-subscribers.
Fred Spiksley
Sounded like a good pre-season workout. Don't know much about FC Vulva but a Russian top flight team can't be mugs. Nice one lads.

TrickyTrev
Sounds like it was a decent work out for the side and at this stage that's the most important thing to take from these games. One thing that does concern me however when looking at the squad in general and the team tonight, is that if you take JJ out of that side we're pretty much redundant in mid-field when it comes to creating any kind of spark. We've plenty of work man like mid-fielders in the squad but given the teams lack of creativity last season, i really think we still need to sign a decent winger and a ball playing central mid-fielder. Obviously I'd like Koumas and Dyer although with those to looking unlikely, I'm hoping Megson is closing in on alternative targets so we can get them in with plenty of time to spare ahead of the new season. i may be dygressing a little but just a concern of mine. owls maniac
I understand where you are coming from mate, and hopefully the fact that we made a move for Dyer suggests that Megson has identified that we are in need of more spark in midfield. Bluesteel
I think we must be 50 per cent complete. Were solid but need to get a bit of creativity in. Semedo and Prutton starting as they mean to go on!

Abayev interrupted supply from the corner of the field and quickly put the ball in play. Akhmetovich threw a projectile at Vatsadze, who had fled to a rendezvous with Weaver. Guest jlb321
Sounds like a good work out against a team who are not performing too shabbily in their first season in the Russian PL. http://www.soccerway.com/national/russia/premier-league/2011-2012/regular-season/ Sounds like some positives to build on. Guest Sheff Owl
Rob Jones was the only absentee and Megson revealed the defender suffered a neck spasm early in the day but felt fine later in the day but did not want to risk him. Wonder what's going on with Buxton?
