Fittingly it was April the first 1991 and we were weeing the league, we had beaten Chelsea of the 1st Div 5-1 on agregate and were Wembley bound. We were playing Oxford Utd normally this would be a 16K fixture but doing so well we drew just short of 29K expectant fans. Nothing went our way, the normally assured Sherridan was having a stinker and he could n't deliver a pass. We slipped a goal behind late in the first half but hopes were raised as we were awarded a penalty; At the Leppings lane end Sherridan hit it tamely to the keepers left who fell on it gratefully. We are Wednesday we believe, it's only Oxford, they are crap. "Roll on the second half" Think it could n't get any worse ? it did and Sherridan got worse too missing a second penalty, by this time we were 2-0 down. But once more I was reduced to disgust by the treatment meeted out to our own team by our own fans...Sherridan, the man who in a few short weeks was going to smash a 23 yarder in off the post at Wembley, securing our first trophy for 56 years was stood there folornly in the Hillsborougfh centre circle being booed. I was and am still disgusted by this kind of treatment. I know for a fact that Sherridan has never forgotton this nor the commiserations and appologies he received straight after the game. Some of our fans seem to forget that there are 11 other men out there who's sole aim it is to stop the opposition playing, if it was easy we would all be superstars. You have n't wasted your weekend, that's what supporting The Wednesday is all about !
