Austria game confirmed

What's the idea of this trip to Austria?

We are travelling halfway across Europe to play a side the equivalent standard of Stocksbridge P.S.

Now is it just me who doesn't get the idea? We are a club with well known financial problems, yet we are wasting christ knows how much on travelling to Austria (Why there?!) to play one game against poo opposition.

Whats the problem with staying at home and playing poo opposition over here?

If we were going to Austria to play a few games against reputable opponents building up relationships and affiliations then I could understand. But it just seems we are doing it for the sake of it.

Seems Austria is the place to be. Good facilities (top European countries train there) and Irvine can make them run up and down big nasty mountains til they're fit.

Going away is also a bonding exercise I guess.

Two points.

How can one game be called a "tour"?

What the frick is AI talking about when he says "that we get our first taste of playing on a big pitch"? How big is this pitch if its bigger than anything we've played on before?

What a crock of poo .

As opposed to training pitches.

I think this point has been covered numerous times by Irvine - at Hirsty's Bar, the Foundation Q&A, etc, etc...

It's not about the match itself, it's about the training up to the match.

Facilities and conditions there are ideal for a really tough, rigorous, fitness-based pre-season training session. It's been said that this will be the toughtest pre-season that any of the players will have ever faced, in terms of training, fitness, etc.

The pre-season this year is more about fitness and getting players in peak conditions, rather than the 'holiday' style pre-seasons of previus years. It's something Irvine did at his previous clubs and he feels the teams benefit massively from these kind of trips, rather than 'holiday tournaments'.

Of course, we also have the competative nature of the pre-season games in the UK too.

But why Austria? Why travel halfway across Europe?

We are a club that haven't a pot to wee wee in. We rely solely on the fans to provide the playing budget. Why can we spend (I'd imagine a lot of money) on travelling to Austria for a few days of hard training and a game against a team of amateurs?

What's wrong with doing that hard work in Sheffield? We are told by the club we have superb training facilities. Yet they aren't good enough to outweigh spending money on travelling to superior venues in Central Europe? What's wrong with travelling to Scotland or to specialist venues in England for such "rigourous, fitness based pre-season training sessions."

I'm sure if I asked Irvine himself, he'd tell what you have James. But it's just blurb. It' just seems like an excuse to go to Europe.

Just checked and you can fly from Stanstead to Salzburg for around £80 - £90 if you want to take in the game.

I'd have gone but I land back from holiday on the Saturday morning the game is played

Correct altitude training to get them fitter quicker + squad bonding and all that.

Altitude training?? A week in the Alps will do F.... All.

I've been living at 5,000 ft in the Rocky Mountains for a year now and I'm STILL fat and out of shape.

I move a lot of concrete on the QVC.

There is the obvious benefit of the whole squad going away which will allow them to bond. Almost half of the squad (8 plus the 3 kids) will not have been with the current players week in week out all season.

There is also the altitude training which will improve fitness and get players fitter quicker.

The Malta trip was a great trip for the fans (i.e. Grandad and his lad) but turned our team into a pampered bunch of also-rans.
